Stupid Question: Why are we using the term "mainstream media"?
Edited on Mon Dec-13-04 10:46 PM by Karmadillo
Given it's owned by corporations who use it as a mouthpiece for the oligarchs, isn't "mainstream" something of a misnomer?

1. Do you prefer "The Corporate Media?"
Or "The So-Called Liberal Media?"

2. I like "corporate media", but either is certainly more accurate than msm.

9. "MSM" is a Freeper term, from Free Republic
that has been transferred here recently. Mainstream media is what the Freepers call "Liberal Media" when they are trying to be subtle. I can't stand the term "mainstream media" - I think it's a red herring - it's not the "mainstream" part that's the problem, it's the corporate part. Hence, I always use Corporate Media.

12. One would think we would want to avoid using Freeper terminology.

Thanks for the explanation. I wonder what made DU embrace the term so suddenly.

4. Since it controls the mainstream print, television and radio
and reaches mainstream America, what else would one call it?

This election story has been told in little snippits, here and there by local news outlets but the Mega media hasn't bothered to pay much attention.

8. I thought we used the term in an ironic way -- understanding...
that our media is mainstream in the same way that Fox is fair and balanced. I usually put quotation marks around it: "mainstream media."

10. mainstream media are those media who's messages reach
the vast majority of the people, thus shaping the 'public mind'. The fact that these media are propaganda machines for corporate interests doesn't change that.
