Bush to avoid Canada's Parliament; has no desire to be 'booed'
Edited on Wed Nov-24-04 10:15 PM by Bluebear
Swoon! My big, brave hero!!!

===
WASHINGTON (CP) - President George W. Bush will avoid a potentially hostile reception in Parliament and travel to Halifax next week after his first official trip to Ottawa, White House sources said Wednesday.

Bush's side trip to thank Canadians who helped out after the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks will come after a working visit Tuesday with Prime Minister Paul Martin and a dinner reception with hundreds of prominent Canadians. American officials involved in planning the trip were worried about a cranky audience on Parliament Hill, sources said.

"We didn't see the need and, frankly, we didn't want to be booed. There are other, better venues," said one U.S. official.

Last week, the White House brushed off the latest anti-American outburst of MP Carolyn Parrish, who appeared on a comedy show stomping on a Bush doll before Martin turfed her from the Liberal caucus. Her antics didn't directly contribute to the decision to avoid Parliament, sources said.

But Bush wanted to avoid another embarrassing incident like the one in Australia last year, when he was shouted down by Green party senators while trying to address the parliament in Canberra.

1. Stealing a notion from Socrates . . .
If he doesn't want to be booed, he should behave in such a manner as will not inspire others to boo.

If they would shout down Bush when he speaks. Why can't we have senators like that?

Welcome to DU! :hi:

Just curious ... what's the housing market like up there in BC? I'm thinking I need to get out of this fascist country for my own safety and that of my family.

22. Excellent tool, thanks.
I played around with it a bit. Just what I expected. Housing is very expensive compared to where I live (central GA, USA).

23. Remember those are Canadian dollars though
20% less or so than US. BC is very expensive, there are much more reasonable places to live in Canada. Cheers!

27. Yes, I considered the exchange rate.
At the rate the US$ is losing value, though, it might not be long before the CN$ is worth more! LOL.

My wife hates the cold weather. I assured her that BC is temperate (if also wet). I suspected that land might also be quite expensive. Thanks for your help.

11. The trip to Halifax is phony....after 9/11 when he went on TV to thank
all the countries that helped America, he never mentioned Canada, even though he knew that we had taken in hundreds of diverted planes, right across the country and had looked after thousands of passengers for almost a week.....He's completely insincere....

28. "other, better venues" -- better than our Parliament?
As a Canadian, I would NEVER say such a mean-spirited thing about the United States Congress. Even if one doesn't agree with all the people assembled inside a legislative chamber, that's no reason to pour scorn on the democratic process. I would have had a lot more respect for him if he'd gone, and acted calmly even if people did (as is their right) heckle him.

Everything, EVERYTHING this man does is calculated to benefit himself and to hell with the rest of the civilized world. Or half his own country.

Not that the govt here will be inviting him back after the shit we gave him last time. That was a fun march. Even though I almost got punched.
