Got a question about the draft and a few other things...
First off how difficult is it to get CO status, also, if you are rejected from getting CO status, what if you simply refused to cooperate? Me, personally, would tell them truthfully, that I would be happy to fight along side them ON OUR SOIL to defend my country, but I would absolutely refuse to go overseas based on BS and lies. Nor would I aid them in any way, I would be truthful in this, what the hell could they do to make me go, besides sending me to jail.

1. Ok on CO status
Edited on Thu Nov-18-04 12:40 AM by nadinbrzezinski
reality is they can tell you fine, here is your medic bag

Look you will have three choices

Go (or avoid it because you have a very high number)

Go to jail

Leave the contry (canada is no longer an option either by treaty, and neither is Mexico)

ON CO status you may still be able to avoid it

Now busy beavers I want you to do the following, you are a male right? RIGHT? Ok find a good lawyer... and FILE for sex discrimination, some people avoided Nam that way.

I'm a little to old I think...26 and all that, more for my sister(possible) and her fiance.

5. If you run down to the Quakers and sign up
...a week before the draft lottery, it probably won't fly. They look for a "pattern of commitment" that must be longstanding before they grant CO status. There are a number of groups that are working this issue, many on the web, you may want to look around and see if you can find some of them--I think someone listed them in another thread somewhere.

If you have a strong, critical skill that will enable you to serve and not have to fire a weapon, they may throw you in that--mortuary services experience is an example that is a real winner (the perversity of that statement is stunning, even though I typed it--but that's how they look at it). If you are especially skilled in the cosmetic and restorative end, you'll probably be sent to Dover to the super mortuary.

The first few COs that are called up will probably be crucified as examples, and warnings to others. Then, the advocacy groups will get up to speed, and it will really get down to a cat and mouse game. The courts will probably be very busy, if it comes to that.

6. the SS will ask the most loaded questions
To be a CO you have to be against violence in all forms, not just war.
They will ask questions like, "if you came home and someone was raping your sister, what would you do?" The correct respone, "I would reason with the perp." This is complete and total BS, and that is why CO is a hard status to be.

7. That's what I'm trying to avoid...
that's also why it would be hard as hell to get CO status, maybe Venezuala is nice this time of year?

8. It's been many, many moons
since I registered, but I believe there is a place on the form to indicate CO status. I told my son he'd better join our church; the Presbyterian Church USA has issued a statement asserting the War in Iraq to be immoral and illegal under international law. (They're not as CO-friendly as the Quakers, but they are more mainstream if you actually may want to become active.)
