Byrd will be targeted in '06 by the GOP`
according the NY Times.

if the '04 campaign is any indicator, the conscience of the senate will face a stealth challenger followed by a blitz of negative advertising from republican front groups. the left really needs to start organizing YESTERDAY to raise funds to counter what will be an attempt to pick off byrd

2. WV ians respect old people and usually vote for a known quantity

but it is possible. This year Warren McGraw a very populist supreme court justice who CONSISTENTLY ruled in favor of the little guy and held the coal companies accountable for their devastation was defeated by a relative unknown.

The deciding factor was a 527 that ran extremely slanderious negative ads against him. Don Blankenship of Massey Coal one of the largest scab outfits in the business put 2 million of his own money into that 527 and bought himself a justice. It was SICK!

5. Pork Barrell King
That's because, prior to re-inventing himself as the anti-Bush/anti-war senator, he was the pork barrell king. He did West Virginia proud with his largess.

9. I live in Ohio and heard those ads, they were disgusting.
The sad thing is they worked. Over and over and over again "Radical Warren McGraw". I heard the asshole who ran against him had never even tried as case in the supreme court. The Repugs knew they couldn't beat Manchin in the Governors race so they spent all their money on the race for the supreme court.

10. I think I read Byrd will be 88 in '06
Edited on Thu Nov-18-04 02:08 AM by Yupster
Also he has a nerve disease (Parkinson's?). I think he may be very vulnerable. Reminds me of Senator Roth of Delaware who lost in a surprise a few cycles ago.

I'll check and edit if the age is incorrect.

On edit, here's his wickipedia page. It looks like he'll be just shy of 89 on election day 2006.

8. I grew up in West Virginia and
I am 37 now and do not rememeber a time without Robert Byrd. If he doesn't step down on his own, he ain't goin' nowhere! Trust me.

The repugs would be foolish to bother.

11. What worries me more is I heard they are targeting my gov.
Great governor of Michigan, great progressive Dem. named Jennifer Granholm. If the amendment passes to allow freaking AHNOLD to run for presidency, should would be a GREAT bet to run against him. Originally born in Canada, she is very popular here in Michigan. Works well with both parties and is doing a bang up job. More than losing Byrd, I would fear losing her.
