Teens With Same-Sex Parents Well-Adjusted

Kelly Burke, a lesbian, holds her son Avery, 3, while playing in the back yard Wednesday, Nov. 3, 2004, in Portland, Ore.

Adolescents who have two moms as parents are no different from teens growing up with a mother and a father, a new study finds.

On measures of psychosocial well-being, school functioning, and romantic relationships and behaviors, the teens with same-sex parents were as well adjusted as their peers with opposite-sex parents. The authors found very few differences between the two groups. A more important predictor of teens' psychological and social adjustment, they found, is the quality of the relationships they have with their parents.

"This is the first study that has looked at adolescents with same-sex parents in a national sample, and it shows clearly across a wide range of variables that they're doing pretty well," said study author Charlotte J. Patterson, a professor of psychology at the University of Virginia in Charlottesville.

1. Shhh. Don't let the Republican fundie freepers find out.
They'll be bitterly disappointed; they want so desperately for those kids to become serial killers or homeless, despairing drug addicts.

6. Not just gays that are destroying America. Evolution theory is too.
I love this. They go on and on and on and on about how the "teaching" of evolution -- which I once heard referred to as the "rantings and ravings of Charles Darwin" (who in fact was a quiet modest man with a deep belief in God) -- and how it has led to lawlessness, crime, mayhem, etc.

I guess this is because people don't "fear God" -- which apparently is the prime motivator for morality. Hmm.

You would expect that prisons would be filled with biologists, naturalists, string theorists, physicists, and paleontologists, who have been made deranged by Darwin's "ranting and raving". But this is not the case.

Albeit, crimes against humanity are often committed by Social Darwinists -- interestingly enough, the God Fearing among us have embraced this "practical application" of the theory of "survival of the fittest to reproduce."

Let's do a statistical breakdown of prison population and see whether the "evolutionary theory anarchy" model holds. (sounds of crickets chirping) It just ain't so.

Here's another statistic: what religious group would you predict would have the highest rate of divorce? Presbyterians? Buddhists? Zoroastrians? Atheists? Southern Baptists?

If you chose "Southern Baptist" -- you are correct. Where am I getting my stats from? A religious website, which is trying to face facts and figure out where they are going wrong (at least have to give them credit for looking at actual facts).... Because -- gotta love the irony -- which group has the most STABLE marriages? If you chose "Atheist", then BINGO!

My analysis of this data would be -- gee, Southern Baptists are pretty "loopy"; they BELIEVE the faith in Jesus they share with their prospective spouse is enough to keep them together. They BELIEVE because they are devout and trust in the Lord, all will be well -- then they wake up one morning and realize they absolutely can't stand their partner apart from their previous idealization of him or her as a Chosen Christian, and possess no skills to make the marriage work in REALITY. I lived in the South -- I saw this happen over and over and over again -- weird expectations of marriage, absolute faith it was a perfect union -- and then the meanest betrayals of their spouses that you can imagine.... But NEVER do they factor reality into their world. They remain "pure" using the most complex mazes of hypocrisy that you can imagine -- or maybe can't imagine....

3. I would have to say they are better adjusted
simply because their parents have to have such a strong bond to weather this sick country's hatred and bigotry.

4. All of these kids are wanted and loved
Let's face it -- there are no unwanted gay pregnancies.

These babies are privileged to be WANTED like this!! Let's face it -- pregnancies are not always welcomed in the hetero world, for any number of reasons. I wager that most of us walking the planet were "accidents." Some of us were fortunate enough to have superb parents who welcomed us and cared for us even though it was challenging -- but a LOT of kids, for many reasons and varieties of reasons, are not exactly 100% welcome. The results range from success to unbelieveably heart-breaking tragedy.

To be a gay parent, you have to be HEROICALLY motivated! To be a hetero parent, you can conceive under even pretty shabby circumstances.....

No surprise that people who were heroically motivated to have a loving family against all odds -- including biology!! -- would be superb parents and raise good kids.

There was an article in salon.com, hmmm, a few years ago, written by a recent hetero parent, contrasting her parenting knowledge and skills with those of her gay friends. *THEY* knew EVERYTHING. They had researched everything. They had everything their infant needed, on hand, sterile, and ready to use.....

Babies who are welcomed and loved -- not a surprise they grow up magnificent human beings....

8. I didn't think they'd be any different.
Don't let the fundies find out. They'll probably try to come up with some kind of lame-ass excuse on how this study is wrong.

I really dislike fundies.
