"More people die each day in US shootings than in Iraq . . . "
. . . so casualties aren't so bad.

This "brilliant" comment came from a conservative colleague.

I was so flummoxed by this "logic" I shook my head and walked away in disgust.

I hate these people.

6. Actually, more people die
every two months on the roads in this country than in all of the Sept 11th event. And yes, I think that's a way of keeping what happened on Sept 11th in some kind of perspective. Or maybe, the perspective is how many die needlessly in car accidents every year.

10. The people dying here are not creating terrorists
For every Iraqi killed how many family memebers will want revenge?

4. Next time that happens,
you could act astonished and say you thought that guns made people safe, and since so many people in the U.S. have guns, you thought this must be the safest country on the planet.

I've run across that "logic" myself, and I cannot understand it at all.

Right now I'm listening to NPR's report on what's going on in Fallujah, and some American military officer is being quoted as saying that you'd have to occupy every single building there to be certain there were no more insurgents left.

7. i would just say isn't it ironic since we're so "uncivilized"
here,we're going around the world trying to "civilize" other countries? evidently, we don't have it so together here after all to be telling other countries how to live!

8. Smoking kills 400,000 Americans a year. Can we attack and
occupy Philip Morris and RJ Reynolds? Maybe grab their CEOs from spider-holes and put them on ice?

12. It's not an excuse for killing people, is it?
It's actually an indictment of US domestic policy, allowing our communities to devolve into poverty, violence, and an underclass of "have nots." If we poured all of our resources into our own cities and communities instead of into Iraq, how many deaths would we have prevented, both in Iraq and at home?

The dismissive attitude the pro-life crowd displays toward the dead never ceases to amaze me.

15. Compare the populations of the entire US
with that of Iraq, which I heard once could be compared to the state of California. So how many people are killed by shootings in that state in one day? That would be a more equal comparison. Could also bring up the fact that the assault weapons ban was allowed by this administration to expire. Expect shootings to increase.

18. The United States is the third most populous nation on Earth
one would expect homocides there to outnumber Iraq for Christ's sake.

That is assuming that the numbers that he is using are accurate, which I question.

Gee. I'm amazed. I mean, I never thought there'd be a situation where someone used US firearms statistics as a POSITIVE point in an argument.
