Helen Thomas: Attack on Fallujah can't be justified.....thank you,Helen.
I was just reading an article by Clark at the WP, defending Fallujah, regrettably, but still explaining its necessity. Only in the future will we know how many we have killed, maimed, and how much damage has been done to our country's image and soul.
We should be saying, our Democrats, Fallujah is just wrong.

http://seattlepi.nwsource.com/opinion/199290_thomas12.html

SNIP..."WASHINGTON -- Do Americans of good conscience really believe that we are making the United States more secure by bombing and killing the people of Fallujah?

That's the justification President Bush and his hawkish circle have given for their brutal offensive against the Sunni stronghold as they push ahead for the total military occupation of Iraq.

Why are we killing Iraqis in their own country? And why are our forces being killed?

Of course it was convenient and the better part of valor for the president to wait until after the election to start dropping the 500-pound bombs on Fallujah as well as raking the streets with artillery and aircraft firepower.

Bush, who has never been in war, flaunted his commander in chief status during the campaign. But clearly he did not want to put it to the test at Fallujah before Election Day. Had he done so, the president would have had to explain why he took the United States into Iraq and why he was targeting innocent Iraqis...."

SNIP..."The silence of the Democrats is playing into the president's hands. As was the case with the original October 2002 congressional resolution authorizing war, Democrats are unsure of themselves and therefore unwilling to challenge the president....."

3. I love you, Helen...
...but you give the red-staters far too much credit.

"By now everyone in this country must know that every reason Bush gave to attack Iraq has turned out to be a false."

May Helen always be in the front row, even in heaven. I'm pretty sure she could make the Almighty squirm if she caught him in a screw-up.
Here's to the truth-tellers!

5. "the silence of the Democrats", Helen is right.
..."The silence of the Democrats is playing into the president's hands. As was the case with the original October 2002 congressional resolution authorizing war, Democrats are unsure of themselves and therefore unwilling to challenge the president....."

Actually though, I don't think they are unsure. I think they approved of the invasion.

America will have to answer for this tragedy called Fallujah someday. A country does not do these things and not pay a price in every way.

Our party is even hushing for fear of sounding weak on defense. That is baloney, pure and simple.

They are acting cowardly. This war, and this vicious attack have redefined our country as immoral and our party as cowardly.
