The Honorable Senator Joe Biden
Dear Senator Biden:
One of the more vivid memories I have from the past year relates to the Abu-Ghraib hearings. You were questioning the witness and when you described the reasons for the Geneva Conventions you personalized the issue by reminding us that the Convention exists to protect your son. It was a very passionate moment that I connected with.
Senator, I write to you today in order to request that you, as a leader of the Democratic party, remember that moment when vetting Mr. Alberto Gonzalez’ nomination to the position of Attorney General. Let us stand for some principle. We, all 56,000,000 of us, feel that there are many “moral” beliefs that bind us all together for the cause of Progressiveness. Torturing human beings is NOT an acceptable government sanctioned activity. It is not moral in our book. Clearly, in Mr. Gonzalez book there’s quite a bit of “wriggle room”. To him, an Iraqi ass pile is an acceptable tactic. How much further down this road to must we travel before we dig in our heels and push back?
The public still have not seen any substantive action that we had expected as a result of the Abu-Ghraib scandal, perhaps we never will. Unfortunately when one works under a double-standard, one tends to take advantage, at the peril of losing their ethical bearings.
I understand full well that there is no doubt that Mr. Gonzalez will be confirmed. There is no doubt that he will continue to implement Mr. Bush radical ideology, that much is understood. However, what WE say now is for the record, for the sake of history, and we must take the opportunity to speak our minds without restraint. I urge you and your Democratic colleagues on the Judiciary committee to do just that.
Humbly yours, XXXXXX XXXXX
