who thinks if Bush "wins" in '04 our military might stage a coup?
This just occurred to me this morning.

Our military is getting its ass kicked. It's looking really BAD right now. They're in the ultimate no-win situation, AND they're stuck there. They don't have any resources available to go anywhere else. They probably want the fuck out.

They probably are HATING George Bush right about now. Especially since he's all bellicose about N.Korea and Iran and whatever the hell else he feels like being bellicose about.

The problem being, of course, what follows (kind of like Iraq). What do you do next? Place a general in charge? Bring in the UN? Put the "real" winner of the election in power?

Am I just nuts? Will this post even survive?

7. How horrific?
Nuclear War? Would that do it and do we have to wait that long? I would hope it could be before then.

11. Nuclear strike on North Korea. That might do it.
Or even Iran. Or, hell, if he starts just one more "war".

Most military guys I've ever known (officers and the like) are pretty practical guys. They might think (practically) that it's better to lop off the head of the snake than to throw the whole snake into the blender.

Ya know?

2. military coup
I don't think there will be a coup. Remember all those
generals that got put out to pasture a month or so ago?

3. It's incredible...
.. how like Get Your War On ( http://www.mnftiu.cc/mnftiu.cc/war.html ) the world really is. How in the course of a few years we have gone from talk of a coup being solely limited to foreign events to semi-serious discussion. I think you really might have something here. I can't believe there isn't more tension in the military being led by an AWOLer from the National Guard who won't even fund them properly.

In the words of GYWO "Holy Fuck!"

4. I don't buy it either
I know I'm sort of bucking the trend, but I have a lot of faith in the resiliency of the American System. We've had lousy presidents before; many of them. We have President Bush, and as much as I hope he doesn't get a second term, we'll probably survive it if he does.

15. This post reflects...
...a complete lack of understanding of the military. The image of the knuckle-dragging soldier who thirsts for war and bloodshed is a silly civilian caricature. The overwhelming majority of military people I have had the privilege of knowing are among the most reluctant to go to war in the whole population. Not only do they have the unique burden of being the ones who are exposed to the danger of getting killed, but also the burden of having to kill, which exacts an emotional toll that few are eager to embrace.

Didn't you listen to the generals before the war? They couldn't have telegraphed their apprehension about the Iraq war any louder. None of them wanted to initiate hostilities with Saddam.

8. I doubt a military coup
But then I never expected a judicial coup either and we had one in 2000.

9. To avoid that possibility
they have been purging the military and replacing the high ranking generals with political drone generals

20. Exactly
If anything, I think it's more probable that if * loses the election, his hand-picked officers will support his voiding the election and declaring himself dictator. The front-line grunts won't be able to organize to oppose that - they'll all conveniently be out of the country fighting *'s trumped-up wars.

10. Interesting question. But: will the military still vote repuke??
I wonder about your question myself. But even more, could the majority of the military bring themselves to vote for a Dem in 2004??? It would be a FIRST time, for many of them if they did.

As for a coup, I don't see how they could vote for GWB, and then stage a coup against him.

13. I don't think the military will vote for W. this time
they probably did last time. But this time?

I don't think so. I mean, they probably wouldnl't vote for Kucinich, but Dean or Kerry and especially Clark, they probably would take any of these guys over Shrub.

Shrub's getting them picked off one by one, making them look bad, paralyzing them. Why vote for that?

18. I hope you are right.
But as I said, for many of them, it will be extremely hard to vote Dem. It would be like, me making myself vote repuke, which I have NEVER done.

I suspect that many military people will first *hope* that GWB is not renominated in 2004, but once he is, they will hold their noses and vote for him.

16. I dont think so.
The military still is, at core, loyal to the Constitution, no matter who is president.

The way the military establishment deals with people or policys it dont like is to energize non-uniformed lobbying and political support combined with leaks and "bureaucratic veto.

19. soldiers dont man factories, nor grow crops,
anyone else remember what happened in france when a coup against degaulle occured?

the day when an M-15 is pointed at workers at a munitions plant to make them produce more bullets, that day the factory goes up in smoke.

the day when an M-15 is pointed at farmers in a field to harvest crops, that day the fields goes up in smoke.

21. Personally, I think they'll defeat him with absentee ballots
How many guys are in the 3rd Light Infantry Division in Iraq? What State are they stationed in? Which States have the highest percentage of reservists? Don't you think they'll be telling the reporters there who they voted for BEFORE election day?

.....will be out.

A coup from that direction will most likely be in support of the 'cabal'.

23. Some people here would support Bush
If you look at all the anti-military rhetoric surrounding Clark on this board, it would consistent of these people to support Bush over "professional killers" in the military.
