I think he's a mixed bag. As an administration official, he's clearly the lawyer - advocating his "boss"'s position. As a judge, he's pretty reasonable FOR A REPUBLICAN APPOINTEE. His judicial record is mixed, but on balance, is better than most republican appointees, and there's some good stuff there.

His "record" on criminal law is ALL "lawyer-based" rather than judicially-based. And - given that he was representing Bush, that record is truly scary.

9. I agree, there's some interesting stuff there. I was surprised at the

concurring opinion to overturn the parental notification ruling.

I realize he has to support his boss, but then don't we all!

I actually think we could do a whole lot worse that this guy! He sure beats Ashcroft!

10. I agree -- cautiously...

... I'm VERY concerned about his record on criminal cases. The stuff re: the capital punishment cases -- is horrendous.

On the other hand -- the other cases are far better than Rehnquist, Scalia OR Thomas.

15. Mixed bag, yes. Less of a fanatic, more corrupt--right up Dubya's alley

in other words. He sounds like the Compleat Texas politician. i can't wait to hear Molly Ivins' take on him.

in some ways i find it slightly less scary than Asshat, who not only had Neanderthal politics but pursued his enemies with a righteous obsessiveness. he believed in a Higher Calling. this guy clearly doesn't care about anything but helping himself and his friends. if we're lucky, he'll have Dubya's Texan work habits, too. horrible as his human rights decisions are, it could be that as long as he's not actually in a job on the bench, he'll be quite content to make the A.G. role the paid figurehead job it's tended to be in the past. we can but hope.

Of course, I'm saying this as a gay woman who isn't having legal status issues and isn't a Moslem; I might feel very differently if it were the other way around.

but i get the impression that perhaps Rove & co. feel like they've given their share of red meat to the fundie base wrt the gay marriage issue, which is the gift that keeps on giving.
