"Covenant marriage" pushed by Arkansas' governor.
From an article in the The Arkansas Democrat Gazette today:

Gov. Mike Huckabee said Monday that he and his wife plan to convert their marriage into a covenant marriage on Valentine’s Day at Alltel Arena in North Little Rock.
The governor said he hopes at least 1,000 other couples will join him and first lady Janet Huckabee in converting their marriages to covenant marriages that make it more difficult to divorce.
Under state law, covenant marriage is an option that requires premarital counseling and a two-year waiting period before divorce.

SNIP

Huckabee said it’s up to each pastor whether to refuse to marry couples who will not enter into a covenant marriage.

2. Why does "The Handmaiden's Tale"
come to mind when I hear this? Wasn't the elimination of divorce one of the things the right wingers in that were fighting for?

5. That's generally my response to all this too, sir (or ma'am).
BRING IT ON!!!! They will destroy themselves in the end. In the mean time, WE WILL NO SHUT UP and TAKE IT KINDLY.

You know what I am most ashamed of now, after all this? Three years ago, I stood outside a high school gym and WHISPERED my oppostion to the war. I and the person I was talking with were looking around to see who might be listening. Well, NO MORE. They want to do something to me for speaking my mind? BRING IT ON!!!!

6. Geez, I was just kidding
When I said put outlawing divorce on the ballot. I didn't know states had actually started putting in laws to make it harder to get a divorce. Women are always the ones who suffer when divorces are hard to get. What is wrong with them?

WE don't need some funky special category for our marraiges, we have a divorce rate about half yours all by "morally inferior" selves.

11. This is the same gobshite
who called Arkansas a "Banana Republic" on nationwide radio and refused to apologize to the people of this state for doing so. Funny, last time I looked, the Huck was legitimately elected--twice. Not something you'd find in your average BR.

Now, he's off on his Covenant Marriage kick. Will somebody from the bu$h regime PLEASE give this fool a job in Washington?

See, kids? THIS is the kind of shit that happens when you put a preacher in the Governor's Mansion.

12. As long as it remains an option
But Republicans I'm sure are just getting warmed up now.

I propose making "marriage" an optional religious ceremony. Every other kind of legal union should be called a "civil union" that is recognized by the State and not the Church. I'm sure that idea would go over big in the Ozark Mountains.
