Terrorists threaten "unbearable hell" after Bush's re-election.
http://www.news.com.au/common/story_page/0,4057,11298151%5E1702,00.html

A GROUP linked to Osama bin Laden's Al-Qaeda network threatened the United States with reprisals after the re-election of President George W. Bush, warning of "unbearable hell," in a website statement today.

"The coming days will show you that the one you preferred will lead you to an unbearable hell," said the group calling itself the Abu Hafs al-Masri Brigades after the Al-Qaeda military chief killed in Afghanistan in October 2001.

It was not possible to immediately verify the statement. The same group claimed responsibility for the train bombings in Madrid in March this year that killed 191 people in Spain's worst attack and injured another 1,900.

"Although the criminal Bush has spilt blood of Muslims during the last four years and despite the butcheries that he committed and continues to perpetrate in Afghanistan, in Palestine and in Iraq, we see that... the applause of his people is increasing," it said.

"This shows the nature of the American people who approved the war against Islam led by criminal America," it added.

The statement comes after a message from Al-Qaeda leader Osama Bin Laden -- broadcast just days ahead of the US election -- warned the United States of new attacks similar to those of September 11, 2001.

Bush beat his rival Democrat John Kerry to win a second term in office in Tuesday's vote.

"The re-election of the criminal Bush, who is no different from the other leaders of this country who have devoted their efforts to killing Muslims everywhere in the world, will not dissuade the mujahedeen from striking the head of the line of infidelity," it said.

"Bush and Kerry are two sides of the same coin. Both have a dark history that will never be erased. It is the American people who will take the consequences of the politics of its president over the next four years.

"The next days will show that your support of the criminal will not bring you security and will not prevent the muhajedeen from hurting you where you are. The next days will prove this."

Can't argue with that. They nailed it.

5. If they could hit us, they would have.
... Hollow threat, the US military is preparing to crush them in Fallujah, and Afghanistan is a functioning democracy (which is WAY better than a tyrannical Muslim dictatorship). Voters spoke their voice there for the first time ever.

... Seems to me that militant Islam is gasping for breath. I am not frightened by OBL in the least.

Afghanistan is as bad as it has been. And the terrorists grow stronger every time Chimpy opens his goddamned mouth.

Wow, that's a real achievement. It's more stable now than after the devastation and chaos immediately following a major military offensive.

But the drug trade is at record levels, and the 'defeated' taliban and their supporters control the majority of the country. I guess that's progress to some.

Militant islam is not gasping for breath, it's revitalized and their numbers are growing.

But hey, it's not my war. If you think 'crushing' them in Fallujah is the answer, strap on an M16 and go do some killin'!

21. You make a good point about how much ability they do have to hit us
The media loves to hype the danger and risk of terrorism, the same way they like to spread fear about the possibility of a flu epidemic, or crime, or drugs, or any other thing that they can get people scared about.

9-11 was the biggest thing they were capable of, at least at that time. They've made attacks since, like in Bali, but not at the same level, or with the same potential to take thousands of lives at one time.

However, the democracy in Afganistan is not secure yet, the countries where these groups flourish are full of places to hide, and we still need to get these bastards before they can rebuild and do something else.

45. You don't really need to kill thousands at one
time, although that is more spectacular. 100 here, 50 there, 10 another place. We kill 100 of them and 150 come to take their places. We're doing something very wrong. Killing each other is not a solution. This may turn into 1000 years of bloodshed with millions of lives lost. The cynical way to look at it, I guess is that it is one way to cull the overpopulation of the planet. Nature always finds a way to balance populations. Maybe we evolved our own follies in order to prevent ourselves from overrunning the planet and destroying it totally. No one wins, really. If we survive, the planet may not. If the planet survives we may not - not unless we get our act together.

22. Um.. "They" are/can be ANYWHERE..
Do I think they will "hit" the mall across town from me?? nope..

BUT, the way terrorism works is this way:

"They" choose the method, the time, the place.. they always have the upper hand.. they are flexible..

It's one of the cheapest ways of waging "war".. Their "soldiers" are kamakazis..they have no interest in getting away or saving themselves.. Their sole mission is massive damage, many deaths, and total fear..

Through the fear they generate, they set off a chain reaction of massive spending for "protection" against a particular attack that may never happen again..and even if it does, it will be in a different place..

Tanks., F-16s,stealth bombers, even nukes won't stop them..Those retaliatory/premptive measures will only kill their families/friends/children/wives..and make them even more determined..

They think long-term.. Their "struggle" has been going on for thousands of years..

We have poked the wasp's nest, and we will be stung..many times.and we cannot kill them all..

Bush sat on his ass before & during the attack--until he fled in terror.

However, the public might need a little nudge before they allow a military draft. So, Bush's pals will see that we get it.

And Bush's other pals will sing his praises at DU.

39. UNIXnutt: They can hit us and will. Our multi-billion dollar
military is irrelevant in regard to homeland security. On 9-11, the hijacked airliners were flying around for hours, unimpeded. Our land borders are thousands of miles long, impossible to control. The same with our water borders. A crude missile, launched from the deck of any old rusty freighter, 40 miles offshore could reach it's target in 4 or 5 minutes. What's going to intercept that. Perhaps it would be possible were it not for the fact that they can be anywhere along the coast. Iran, China and India, all nuclear possessor have submarines, not to mention many other countries that may or may not be our allies.

The best hope for any Country to avoid terrorist disasters is to avoid motivating those would would be willing to attack. Right now were are involved in a religious war between the Muslims and the Judeo-Christians with encouragement from a greedy and short-sighted military industrial complex. We are at risk of dying while wild eyed
religious extremist on both side act out their fantasies of Armageddon. In light of the WMD in their hands, Armageddon, that ancient piece of nihilistic crap may become a reality. The human race will have the dubious distinction of having the shortest tenure on Earth of any species in history.

But, have heart. A few thousand survivors with stone age skills may well be left to carry on the human race. Perhaps it will take them another two or three thousand years to match our level of retrogression. (In light of the diminished natural resources, the human race may never regain it preeminent position.)

49. In just which one of the 60 countries is al Qaeda "gasping for breath"?
Report: Al Qaeda 18,000 Strong

(CBS/AP) Despite losses around the world, al Qaeda has more than 18,000 potential terrorists, and its ranks are growing because of the conflict in Iraq, a leading think tank warned Tuesday.

Al Qaeda still has a functioning leadership despite the death or capture of key figures, and estimates suggest al Qaeda operates in more than 60 nations around the world, the International Institute for Strategic Studies said in its Strategic Survey 2003-4.

The terrorist group poses a growing threat to Western interests and attacks are likely to increase, the institute said.

"Overall, risks of terrorism to Westerners and Western assets in Arab countries appeared to increase after the Iraq war began in March 2003," institute director John Chipman told a news conference to launch the annual survey.

51. You don't seem to get it...
Terrorists don't need "locations." They don't need "organizations." Fighting a "war on terrorism" is like fighting a war on adulty. The most you can do is create a world that has conditions that foster fewer young moderate people to become radicals.

Terrorism is like mold: when conditions are right (and Bush has certainly made them right) it grows on the walls everywhere spontaneously. Incidently, eventually, if Iraq DOES elect a democratic government, it will be rabidly anti-American and rabidly Islamic. On that day and age we will yearn for the day when all their internal hate was directed at each other. I don't understand why everyone in the world except Americans and Israelis understand this simple dynamic.
