What should I do with my new big ass Bush/Cheney sign?
Edited on Tue Oct-12-04 08:21 AM by HFishbine
So, some moron decides he's going to hammer us into submission and starts planting 4' x 8' Bush/Cheney signs around town.

The only problem is my city has very clear ordinances on political signs. They are not to be larger than 6 feet square and they may not be placed in public right-of-ways or on public property.

The moron broke both rules by putting a 32 feet square sign in a city planting area. So I removed it. (In case you wonder if I was right to do so, the moron put up another and this time a city inspector took it down).

What should I do with my shiny new sign?

1. Add the circle with the slash in the middle"The do not symbol"
And put the sign in back of a pick-up truck and drive around town.Advertise do not vote for Bush/Cheney.

6. I like that
The city ordinance is a little ambiguous on that one. It says that signs which are attached to vehicles used in the normal transport of goods are allowed if they advertise the primary use of the vehicle, but it doesn't specifically say that signs attached to personal vehicles are prohibited.

I'll give that one some thought.

4. Good one!
Thought of something similar, but the sign would still violate the size ordinance.

10. What about a puzzle?
Cut it into the right size parts and put each on a different stick.

Or take the sign out side the city/town and plant it.

12. Oooh, you're clever
Right size each on it's own stick! Damn, that's good. That would be in compliance.

13. Yeah, two vertical cuts, make it into three signs...
Edited on Tue Oct-12-04 08:18 AM by Rabrrrrrr
that should work.

But I'd also think that if HFishbine just cut it down to the actual text, it would meet regulations.

7. Windows
Put it in yours or someones home window. That way it isn't out side and might fly under the legal radar.

However, even if the sign was placed wrong, you can't prove that is where you got it. Hence, it will seem like a "hot" sign and could be punishable. And if you do anything to it, then you defaced it, also punishable.

Find out where your city/town dumps their signs and stop in there. Pick up all the signs you want. That way if anything is said later..... Also, mistakes happen on both sides. Someone needs to go get those Kerry signs that might have been yanked up for being placed wrongly.

9. Get a sign permit
I forgot. Most places allow signs if you go get a permit for it. You have to state there where and what, etc. And of course, as with all permits, there is a fee. You might want to check it out.

11. You know, that's a great idea
I may just turn in the one I have -- keep everything on the up and up and pick up some Kerry signs for recycling while I'm at it. Afterall, it's about playing by the rules. Thanks for the best suggestion.

15. Lots of games "signers" play
Bush's brother Jeb had some sign problems in 2002. He used those plastic wrap type signs that slip over a square U shaped post. Someone came along and turned them inside out. Didn't take them. Left them there. Just turned them inside out. It made the news. And kept making the news, because they never did catch who was doing it. The signs that were hit weren't the ones in yards. But the ones just out "were ever".

Professional "sign sabators" generaly don't take the signs. So they don't deface or steal the sign. When I'm out and I know one of "our" signs was in an area.. I stop and look for it. Most of the time I can find it laying around in tall grass, etc.

20. Just to be clear
I'm completely against sign sagatoge. I truley believe people have a right to show their support for whoever they want. BUT when one team is keeping signs within the size limit and obeying the law about where they may be posted and the other isn't, then I don't mind picking up some litter.

25. I agree 100%
Trust me, I wasn't involved. But what I do know is that we can learn from "professionals." They know where the "line" is. You left the scene with the sign. If pulled over, you would have some explaining to do with no proof. OUCH!

I sign with my children. We put back up signs we find laying down. And that includes signs we don't agree with. I know, I know.. some would be upset with me over that. Naturaly I'm NOT going to purposly destroy, take, etc someone elses signs. I know what it's like to have mine taken. And if I returned the favor, I'm just keeping the cycle going. I just look for "mine" and put them back. Replace those that are totaly gone, etc.

I only do the yard size signs. But in the process.. out, way out from town, I did find some of our big ones laying along side the road where they couldn't be seen. This was back in 2002. I called the guys who do the "big ones" and all the canidates involved and let them know exactly where their signs were. I couldn't lift them,etc.. or I would have brought them in.

Signs cost tons of money. Donated money. It's hard finding places for them, etc. I do unto others as I wish for them to do unto me.

However, in the process I did learn alot to make my "job" easier. Which is that the signs are not always taken, but tossed/hidden in the area. And the city/county in question generaly has a dump site set up for signs placed incorrectly. That is wasted DONATED money laying there. And someone should go get them and put them back out in the field. The closer it is to election, the harder it is to get signs.

Pay attention to what they do in your area and you can figure out a response. The same people "do it" every time. Once you got their "tag", you can quickly correct what ever they did. That is the main lesson I learned.

16. Wisconsin's court system recently struck down sign regs
in relation to private property as a violation of free speech. My DA even mentioned it and will not likely prosecute violators this year.

Maybe you have a little spare cash and want to make a statement about free speech in your town.

You'll need a 6' step ladder, a box type fan, an extension cord and of course, your Bush/Cheney sign.
Run the extension cord from your house ouside to a secluded area (we don't want the neighbors prying eyes to see this). Place the Bush/Cheney sign (text side facing upwards) on the ground. Position the box fan on top of the Bush/Cheney sign so that the exhaust goes toward the sign. Position the ladder directly over the box fan. Place the switch of the box fan to the "on" position. Climb up the step ladder, drop your pants and take a huke dump directly into the operating fan.
Voila! You have just demonstrated what happens when "the shit hits the fan". You've put the proper finishing coat on the Bush/Cheney sign and it is now suitable for dispaly in your chosen Republican's front yard.

24. Put a big bandaid on it....
You know, one of those big novelty bandaids that drivers used to put on their car after a fender-bender. Place the bandaid diagonally so that it obscures the "Bush/Cheney" names. Then paint a purple heart in the middle of the bandaid and write "Kerry" and "Edwards" on the left and right bandaid flaps.
