Judith Miller ordered to jail

http://www.thebostonchannel.com/news/3791567/detail.html

A New York Times reporter called it "frightening" that journalists can be put in jail "for doing their jobs effectively."

A federal judge has ordered Judith Miller (pictured, left) to prison for refusing to name some confidential sources.

The judge said Miller will stay in prison until she agrees to testify about her sources before a grand jury looking into the leak of an undercover CIA operative's identity. She could be jailed up 18 months.

The judge said the Supreme Court has ruled reporters do not have absolute constitutional protection from testifying about confidential sources.

A special prosecutor is looking into whether a law was broken when CIA officer Valerie Plame's name was leaked.

Her name was published by columnist Robert Novak.

Miller never wrote a story about Plame, but acknowledged gathering material for one.

13. Why Wait
Last I heard they had an infirmary at Riker's Island, and if they don't have the proper facilities, Bellvue has a prison section.

9. If that's why he's not in jail that's bullshit.
They make women give birth in jail. So Blowvak can just get himself some crutches and hobble on over to his cell.

7. Good. Treason investigations trump 'journalistic integrity'.

Judith Miller spent a couple of years metaphorically sucking Republican dick for story leads, so as far as I'm concerned she's got her priorities way out of whack. She's trying to posit that protecting her Treasonous source is more important than convicting somebody who's willing to put partisan politics above the National Security interests of the country.

I say, let her sit in that cell and think about ethics for a few weeks.

11. I still don't get why Novak
who is the cause of this, doesn't even seem to be talking. He should be the one in jail. Whatever her crimes, Novak wrote the damn article!

18. Because he is the subject of a grand jury investigation
he is not a witness. When the grand jury is finished their work, then charges will be filed against Novak and anyone else who was involved in this crime.

On the other hand, Judith Miller is a witness who is refusing to testify. That is why she is being charged with contempt of court.

19. No, she was not doing her job.
A wonderful poster on another site framed the argument as such:"...The shield or whistle blower law was designed to protect those individuals who wanted to expose government wrongdoing. It was never meant to be used to protect government officials who committed a crime and then had reporters aid and abet them doing so...."

Ms. Miller is doing the latter. She is despicable and can be compared to one of those women who falsely cry rape, therefore making it harder for real rape victims to be taken seriously. Ms. Miller is a victimizer, not a victim.
