Poll question: Is there a rift among the neocons, as this article suggests?
Why did Bremer speak out now in the middle of the election season? It may just have been an error of judgment on his part. He was speaking to an insurance association in West Virginia, and may not have intended his remarks to become public. As for the substance of his original statement, it is clearly an attempt on his part to begin shifting some of the blame for the Iraq debacle from himself onto other players, chiefly Rumsfeld and Wolfowitz. Bremer's place in history, not to mention any future career in Washington, depends on his ability to convince analysts that he was not principally at fault for how things went bad in Iraq.

I remember there being rumors that Bremer pressed Washington for more troops in summer of 2003, to no avail, so he could be settling scores on that rebuff.

Then there was this amazing admission by Rumsfeld at a news conference:

QUESTIONER: My name is Glenn Hutchins. Mr. Secretary, what exactly was the connection between Saddam Hussein and al Qaeda?

RUMSFELD: I tell you, I'm not going to answer the question. I have seen the answer to that question migrate in the intelligence community over the period of a year in the most amazing way. Second, there are differences in the intelligence community as to what the relationship was. To my knowledge, I have not seen any strong, hard evidence that links the two.
Why did Rummy suddenly have this episode fo conscience? It may well be a sign of a rift with the Neoconservatives in the Pentagon. They made him look like a fool, and he seems happy to repudiate them. I suspect he is setting up the Neonservatives to take the fall, after the election, when he will ask for their resignations. And it won't be pro forma.

1. The lie machine has chalked it up to a microphone which should
not have been live, and how many times have we heard that one?

What the neocons are admitting privately (the war in Iraq is a total fiasco) and what they admit in public (trying to blow sunshine up the asses of the faithful) are two very different things.

Anyone who has access to any unfiltered info coming out of Iraq and who doesn't recognize the problems there is psychotic, and these old boys are not.

They're just hoping to sell hearts and flowers and liberty and deomcracy until after the election, so they can hold onto power, which is why they so consistently lie through the mass media.

The wild card in all this is the net, where news isn't as strictly controlled as it is in the mass media. Had people out in the real world not already known the war is a mess, Bremer's remark would likely have been lost.

2. How in the hell should I know?
I fucking hate neocons, and I would rather gnaw off my own testicles than spend enough time with them to decide whether or not they are divided. Fuck them.

3. Its the same with all conspiracies
Sooner or later there is a falling out and the knives come out at the same time.

Remember when Hitler and the guys shanked the SA leadership? That was when the phrase "night of the long knives" came into vogue, though I think it was used before then.

W's terrible performance at the debate must have rattled them down to their socks. Expect to see more "innocent" mistakes and misstatements between now and Nov 2.

Keep in mind that these people are NOT going away, even if we win. They will ALWAYS be there in the background, like monarchists in a republic, chipping away at the rights of the people on behalf of the rich and powerful.

Twelve years from now President Schwarzenegger will appoint _ucker Carlson his Press Secretary.

ANd the dance will go on.
