Do you plan on watching the debates?
I think I have to -- if for nothing else but sheer curiosity.

8. Absolutely.
In fact, I'm supposed to participate in some sort of interactive poll conducted in conjunction with CBS and Cox cable. I agreed to watch the debates on CBS, where questions are supposed to appear on my t.v. screen. I'm supposed to be able to answer the questions using my remote. My household is looking forward to heaping praise on Kerry while dumping on the chimp.

15. Only in hopes that Kerry breaks all the rules
It would be awesome if near the beginning of the debate, Kerry turned and stared at Bush for about four seconds before saying, "You disgust me"

...or...

"Well well, well. You know, I would ask if you're proud of the mess you've gotten this country into, but of course I'm not allowed to ask any questions."

I've heard some other poster say the first comment already on these boards, but I just wanted to repeat it and also put in my line about how Kerry could get away with a line.

36. My debate fantasy . . .
That Kerry immediately says, "Since Bush insisted there be no questions between the candidates one to the other, I'd like to ask these questions directly to the American people:

1) Do you feel safer now than you did on Nov. 2, 2000?
2) Do you approve of how the situation in Iraq is going?
3) Are you better off now than you were 4 years ago?"

This is such an appealing fantasy - I find myself thinking about it constantly - that I wouldn't be surprised if Kerry actually does it, or something much like it.

But I do not know if I could watch what will undoubtedly be a staged ambush on Mr. Kerry. I personally hope they get Chimpy McGoonerson all liquored and coked up and stick him out there. No wait...then he would have a pulse.

Edited on Tue Sep-28-04 05:54 PM by LaPera
expose Bush's lies...

http://www.nytimes.com/2004/09/28/opinion/28krugman.html?hp

"Let's face it: whatever happens in Thursday's debate, cable news will proclaim President Bush the winner. This will reflect the political bias so evident during the party conventions. It will also reflect the undoubted fact that Mr. Bush does a pretty good Clint Eastwood imitation.

But what will the print media do? Let's hope they don't do what they did four years ago.

Interviews with focus groups just after the first 2000 debate showed Al Gore with a slight edge. Post-debate analysis should have widened that edge. After all, during the debate, Mr. Bush told one whopper after another - about his budget plans, about his prescription drug proposal and more. The fact-checking in the next day's papers should have been devastating.

But as Adam Clymer pointed out yesterday on the Op-Ed page of The Times, front-page coverage of the 2000 debates emphasized not what the candidates said but their "body language." After the debate, the lead stories said a lot about Mr. Gore's sighs, but nothing about Mr. Bush's lies. And even the fact-checking pieces "buried inside the newspaper" were, as Mr. Clymer delicately puts it, "constrained by an effort to balance one candidate's big mistakes" - that is, Mr. Bush's lies - "against the other's minor errors."

The result of this emphasis on the candidates' acting skills rather than their substance was that after a few days, Mr. Bush's defeat in the debate had been spun into a victory."

It seemed so very obvious that Bush didn't have what it takes in 2000 after the first "debate" and yet these news people said he was the clear winner. My family was dumbfounded........now we know what's going on and it's not a pretty picture!

33.  I have always felt watching the debates to be my civic
duty. But there have been so many arbitrary rules thrown up for these debates that I almost don't feel like giving them my time. What kind of lame rule is it that the questions that are going to be asked have to be submitted before the debate so they can have the answers ready? That's not a debate. That's a stage show. I'm really disappointed.

34. Yep. I trick myself every four years that the debates will be interesting
and then I sit through the entire thing, yell the same comments at the TV...the most popular being "just answer the f*cking question already!" and then bitch and moan about how I just watched over an hour of people talking without really ever saying a thing. And then I patiently wait for the next debate and start the whole process over again.
