I had a freeper "friend" send me this crap in an email
Anyone remember this??

It was 1987! At a lecture the other day they were playing an old news video of Lt.Col. Oliver North testifying at the Iran-Contra hearings during the Reagan Administration.

There was Ollie in front of God and country getting the third degree, but what he said was stunning!

He was being drilled by a senator; "Did you not recently spend close to $60,000 for a home security system?"

Ollie replied, "Yes, I did, Sir."

The senator continued, trying to get a laugh out of the audience, "Isn't that just a little excessive?"

"No, sir," continued Ollie.

"No? And why not?" the senator asked.

"Because the lives of my family and I were threatened, sir."

"Threatened? By whom?" the senator questioned.

"By a terrorist, sir" Ollie answered.

"Terrorist? What terrorist could possibly scare you that much?"

"His name is Osama bin Laden, sir" Ollie replied.

At this point the senator tried to repeat the name, but couldn't pronounce it, which most people back then probably couldn't. A couple of people laughed at the attempt. Then the senator continued. Why are you so afraid of this man?" the senator asked.

"Because, sir, he is the most evil person alive that I know of", Ollie answered.

"And what do you recommend we do about him?" asked the senator.

"Well, sir, if it was up to me, I would recommend that an assassin team be formed to eliminate him and his men from the face of the earth."

The senator disagreed with this approach, and that was all that was shown of the clip.

By the way, that senator was Al Gore!

Also:

Terrorist pilot Mohammad Atta blew up a bus in Israel in 1986. The Israelis captured, tried and imprisoned him. As part of the Oslo agreement with the Palestinians in 1993, Israel had to agree to release so-called "political prisoners."

However, the Israelis would not release any with blood on their hands, The American President at the time, Bill Clinton, and his Secretary of State, Warren Christopher, "insisted" that all prisoners be released.

Thus Mohammad Atta was freed and eventually thanked the US by flying an airplane into Tower One of the World Trade Center. This was reported by many of the American TV networks at the time that the terrorists were first identified.
It was censored in the US from all later reports.

If you agree that the American public should be made aware of this fact, pass this on.

Is this a hoax email?
Any links to disprove this?

Thanks

North accepted (illegally) a very expensive gift and security system from the middlemen who profited from the arms deal to the Iranian govvernment. His excuse was that he was threatened by Abu Nidal (who was ironically killed by Saddam Hussein's goons in 2002).

What ever happened to the powerful and wrathful God of the Bible? I've looked for Him, but a cuddly, weepy wimp of an imposter -- the Oprah Jesus -- has replaced Him. Apparently, an angry, judgmental God was "testing negative" in an America that prefers to act upon its cherished self-esteem with neither judgment nor consequence. After all, what place does the concept of adultery have in a country that has exchanged the immorality of the act of cheating with the victimhood of the "disease" of sex addiction?

Now, you can let them know how irritating their Disneyfied Jesus is to the wrathful God depicted in the Bible. Send them an automated, head-spinning rebuke: the E-buke! Just press a button and Betty & Jesus do the rest!

12. Alas, many of us have no choice
I'm the only progressive in a family full of Faux-loving kool-aid drinkers. My extra-high-octane older brother just got in town, who called me last week to rant about Dan Rather. Can't wait for that family dinner on Wednesday, let me tell ya!

I also have friends for almost 20 years who I was friendly with long before they cared a whit about politics. They may have reached different conclusions than me on a host of issues, but until they don the jackboots and brownshirts, they're still the buddies I met many years ago and with whom I've shared a lot of cool experiences.

Of course they know they'll get a stiff argument from me on political issues--but I believe that long-term friends are among life's most precious gifts, and we should keep them as long as they're mutually edifying. The way I see it, their opposing views only prompt me to add sharpness and depth to my own. It's not an entirely bad thing, really, though I certainly see your point.

There's no way I'd go out of my way to befriend the older brother I mentioned earlier if I happened to meet him today, in light of his hyper-wingnut politics--but he'll always be my brother.

20. It's a necessary part of life
Djinn, it is indeed frustrating to deal with people who bullishly insist that up is down. But it is not a good idea to just hang around places like DU where you are only exposed to ideas you agree with, either.

My job often requires me to establish rapport with people whose ideas are repellant. I've gotten good at smiling and nodding at the right places, although I never quite claim to agree with anything I don't really agree with I use weasel words to hide just how much I really disagree with them while probing the depths of their ignorance. It's frustrating and sometimes maddening but also eye-opening. The world is full of these people who would rather have someone else think for them. Ignore this fact at your peril.

Also, if you avoid politics, some of them are damn nice people on an individual level. They don't hold the fucked up ideas they hold because they're evil, but because they've boxed themselves into a pathological mindset. As long as you avoid their hot buttons they can be helpful and even pleasant to have around. The occasional accidental foray into hot-button territory serves as a good occasional reminder of just how much of the outside world is insane.

25. unfortunately I can't avoid right wing folks
but I don't have any desire to friends with them and I certaibnly don't ignore them but they're not getting invited around for drinks at my house any time soon.

I know most are decent people if you keep the conversation off politics, sexuality, religion, society, multiculturalism etc etc but it basically leaves sport to talk about and sport bores me stupid, like I said it's not that I don't know and have to interact with these people I'm just never going to be friends with them

17. It's easier to hit "send" than read up on the actual events.
The Oliver North e-mail has been going around for several years (a relative sent it to me), and even Oliver North made a point of posting a message on his website to declare the e-mail a hoax.

Anyone who knows something about the history of U.S. foreign relations for the last quarter-century will notice right away that something about the e-mail doesn't smell right. In the 1980s, the U.S. still would have been backing the mujaheddin ("Holy fighters") against the Soviets in Afghanistan. Osama bin Laden would not have registered as a threat; much of the concern was taken up with the hostage-takings and warfare in Lebanon.

Also, the e-mail fits the category of "too good to be true" right-wing propaganda, since it passes North off as prescient, a hero, and Al Gore as a dangerous buffoon. The reality is that Gore wasn't even on the Iran-contra committee and that we are still dealing with the consequences of the Reagan administration's policies in Iran and Iraq. This is all the messy, complicated stuff that the Bushes and their ilk disdain dealing with.

23. Funny how they leave out the FACT that North was being grilled...
..for the treasonous act of selling weapons to our TERRORIST enemies, and that he was later convicted.

I have no idea whether Gore specifically disagreed with assassinating Bin Laden, but endoring state assassination would be somewhat sensational.

The Atta story sounds fishy all around...

24. Gore wasn't there.
The conversation is one between Oliver North and lawyer John Nields (hardly a household name), and the topic was not Osama bin Laden but Abu Nidal. Someone plugged the names "Al Gore" and "Osama bin Laden" into the transcript.

Gore wasn't on the Iran-contra committee, and the Congressional Record has no record of a mention of Osama bin Laden in the year that the real conversation between Nields and North took place.

26. Thanks - you jogged my memory!
I remember him mentioning Abu Nidal - but it was easy to switch to Osama since it's been years ago! Nidal used to be the big baddie before Osama started getting a lot of press in around 1998.

...and I still think it's funny they left out the REASONS why North was there. millions of us are too young to remember, or too forgetful. Even back then, I remember telling people "He's a scumbag who sells weapons to terrorists and imports drugs to this country to get money to murder nuns in central America! and they'd blather mindlessly about how wonderful North looked in his uniform, etc.

The sad thing is, people have only gotten worse in the intervening years...

However, in Imperial Amerika, there is no such thing as "truth" or "lie" anymore.

It, as Orwell predicted, would be a precondition of our eventual enslavement, already well underway.
