CEO gets $50k raise +5% per year, non-profit agency that serves the poor
Board approves CEO raise; some employees concerned

Video

Updated 9/21/04
BAKERSFIELD - Many employees of a non-profit agency that serves the poor are outraged by a considerable raise approved for the agency’s chief executive officer.

Clinica Sierra Vista’s Board of Directors approved CEO Steve Schilling for a $50,000 raise, but some employees say it’s ironic because Schilling just explained his financial philosophy to the company.

“'It’s not about money,’ he tells us,” said Lab Assistant Milani Larrea. “’It’s about what’s in here, and what you’re doing for your community and your clinic. It’s about what you’re doing for your people, the poor people, and the farm workers.’ But yet, he doesn’t go by those standards.”

.....

On top of the immediate raise, Schilling also will receive a 5 percent raise each year for seven years, bringing his salary to more than $260,000 by 2011.

(personal disclaimer: my wife used to work for this guy when she was counseling aids patients, she does not think real highly of him...)

1. this news will hit the philanthropy circles and could adversely affect
fundraising for the npo. He may have a tough time raising his own salary or convincing his development team to raise it.

(fair disclosure... I'm an underpaid director of an NPO)

2. not against a good salary
but knowing the things I know I don't think it is such a good idea in this instance. If a CEO of such a company can raise the incoming funds substantially I could see a pay raise as an investment. Have not seen him do this yet (again, only from what I know). I would gladly give a 50k raise if they brought in a few mil more but some things need a second look...

Thanks for the input!

5. I'd be interested in knowing what percentage of the npo's budget
goes to pay the salary of this person and if he brought with him some big donors. Those are the questions many major donors will be asking. I haven't met a donor yet who likes to see their financial gift eaten up by administrative costs. It's all about the programming.

3. He makes too much money. My judgement, but I wouldn't give to any
charity with a CEO making $260,000 a year. I just wouldn't.

6. Wow. I used to run a non-profit. Fire him, hire me, and I'll donate over
half of my salary back to the company as a charitable contribution, and do a great job as an administrator, too.

"It's not about the money..."

Stevie, dear, when you're gonna be pulling down 260 kilobucks for being the "Pretty Face" for some charity, it's *ALL* about the Ben-Jammins....

As we've seen all too many time recently from the Corpo world, all a CEO does is play golf, fuck his pick of the women, throw extravagant parties on the company dime, then when the shit hits the proverbial air-handler and he's doing the Perp-Walk, it's all "I know NOZZEEN! NOZZEEN! I'm just the CEO, I don't know what goes on in this comapny!"

Fucker votes GOP, too, I'll bet...
