CBS memos won't die, Bill Burkett just made it worse, statement issued:
Edited on Mon Sep-20-04 04:34 PM by Hilary08
EDIT For those of you supporting the coverage of the CBS memos, keep in mind: THE WH IS PUSHING TO KEEP THIS ISSUE AT THE FOREFRONT. Why do you think they're doing so? Because it helps them! If you want to AID in their bid to the WH, by all means, go ahead and keep talking about it! But if you want to send George Bush back to Crawfish Texas, then FOCUS ON WHAT HE'S DOING WRONG (which is everything, the economy, Iraq, education, healthcare, social security... everything!).

From Bill Burkett's lawyer David VanOs:

"Based upon my personal knowledge of Bill Burkett's character from knowing him and knowing of his reputation among his peers, I will state unequivocally that Bill Burkett did not falsify or create the "CBS documents." I do not assume that anyone falsified or created those documents until more is known, but if anyone did, it was not Bill Burkett."

This topic needs to just DIE. The longer the media hounds this issue, the less focus on Shrub and Kerry....given that EVERY SINGLE ISSUE in the news except this, can only show Shrub's negatives (tanking economy, more dying in Iraq, another American just beheaded, etceteras), yet with Bill Burkett running around, the American public is only shown that "them there uh, durn pesky Democratic girlie men" are "desperate" and out to get Shrub.

UNBELIEVABLE... everything is going against Shrub, and the ONE issue that takes focus away from that is at the forefront AND he gains in swing states?! Where is the DNC to just SHUT BILL BURKETT UP.......the WH is already laying the groundwork accusing the Kerry camp having a hand in the forgeries.......no way can this election seriously be decided by typefonts.

Let's tell Burkett/CBS to just STOP, and to focus on THE TERRIBLE ECONOMY, the 45 million without health insurance, the homocidal circus in Iraq... you know, issues that MATTER.

63. Plus, the 08 after "hilary" shows an assumption that Kerry will lose in 04
"hilary12" I might understand, but "hilary08" demonstrates and assumption that Kerry will lose in 04, so Hillary will be free to run in 08. :grr:

And I think the memos were typed (poorly) by Killian himself:

Notice how the White House doesn't say they're fake? They only claim no recollection of ever having seen them. That's CYA-speak.

Notice how the White House doesn't say they're fake?

Of course the White House didn't say they were fake. What would you expect, for them to point out a monster screw-up that would over shadow the rest of the story demonstrating that Bush was AWOL and had help from daddy? Please, the WH saw CBS putting its head into the noose, calmly stood back and watched, and cheered.

But his proof fell apart. Unfortunately, everybody thinks that only Microsoft Word can do a superscript, so the rumor took off. But it's just a rumor. No evidence of forgery.

I had no idea they were once friends. Bill says it himself in an old article

snip: The only benefits that we have received have come at the end of a court order; and they have been under constant challenge. Needless to say, we know the White House counsel personally. We know Dan Bartlett, Karen Hughes, Joe Allbaugh, Don Evans, and many others very personally. Dick Cheney used to be a close friend. No longer.

How cute to use "we".

a. The democrats will not lose, and certainly not by a landslide, so who is "we"?

b. Kerry's run a lackluster campaign thus far, but it's hardly been "bungled". This latest nonsense has nothing to do with Kerry.

And what, pray tell was Bill's advice to Kerry? Isn't it all just part of Bill & Hillary's plan to make Kerry lose so Hillary can run in '08? I believe that's what rush says, right Hilary08?

If Hillary gets on the ticket IN 2012, I'm sure we'll all support her, but if you're just going to sit around here and trashtalk Kerry with nothing constructive to say, you're just gonna piss a lot of people off. A LOT of us had other favorites in the primaries, but we're democrats and we stand behhhind the nominee, who by the way has a hell of a resume, whether helping to end the pointless Vietnam war, helping to find POWs & MIAs after the war, as a district attorney in Boston, investigating the Iran/Contra treason, etc. What the hell has Hillary done in 2 years as a senator that you're (pretending to be) so jazzed about?

30. GW Bush was and still is a phony!!!

The Bushmoonies scrape and bow to his every word. It matters not that he is a pathological liar.

• "You can't say one thing and do another."-- George W. Bush, 10/31/00

• “If you overspend, it creates a fundamental weakness in the foundation of economic growth. And so I'm working with Congress to make sure they hear the message -- the message of fiscal responsibility.”-- 9/16/02

(Less than 6 months later, Bush proposed a budget that would put the government more than $300 billion into deficit.)

• “Having been here and seeing the care that these troops get is comforting for me and Laura. We are -- should and must provide the best care for anybody who is willing to put their life in harm's way.”-- Walter Reed Army Hospital, 1/17/03
(That same day the Bush Administration cut off access to its health care system from approximately 164,000 veterans.)

• “We're dealing with first-time responders to make sure they've got what's needed to be able to respond.“--

3/27/02 (Bush said he was proposing $3.5 billion in “new” money for first responders, but he actually tried to rob more than $1 billion from existing grants to local police/fire departments to fund his proposal. In August 2002, Bush rejected another $150 million for grants to state and local first responders.)

• “We're working hard to make sure your job is easier, that the port is safer. The Customs Service is working with overseas ports and shippers to improve its knowledge of container shipments, assessing risk so that we have a better feel of who we ought to look at, what we ought to worry about.”--

6/24/02 (Bush’s 2003 and 2004 budgets provide nothing for port security grants. In August, he vetoed all $39 million for the Container Security Initiative that he specifically touted.)

• “A secure and efficient border is key to our economic security.”--

9/9/02 (Bush promised more INS/Border Patrol staff and facilities, but provided no funding. He vetoed $6.25 million for promised pay upgrades for Border Patrol agents, and his 2004 Budget slashes “Border and Transportation Security” by $284 million.)

• “We've got to do more to protect worker pensions.”--

8/7/02 (The Bush Administration proposed new rules so employers could resume converting traditional pension plans to new ‘cash balance’ plans that can lower benefits of long-serving workers.) “Companies favor these plans because they can slash a worker's pension benefit by 20 to 50 percent in one fell swoop.”-- Rep. Bernard Sanders (I-VT.)

• “A reformed and strengthened Medicare system, plus a healthy dosage of Medicare spending in the budget, will make us say firmly, we fulfilled our promise to the seniors of America.”--

1/29/03 (Bush’s 2004 budget proposes 85% less than what would be needed to meet his goal, and would leave 67% of the total $400 billion pledge to be spent after 2008.)

• “I want to thank the Boys & Girls Clubs across the country…The Boys & Girls Club have got a grand history of helping children understand the future is bright for them, as well as any other child in America.”--

1/30/03 (Bush’s 2002 budget proposed eliminating all federal funding for the Boys and Girls Club of America.)

• “Clear Skies legislation, when passed by Congress, will significantly reduce smog and mercury emissions, as well as stop acid rain. It will put more money directly into programs to reduce pollution, so as to meet firm national air-quality goals. ...”-- Earth Day speech,

4/22/02 (Actually, the Clear Skies law delays required pollution emission cuts by as much as 10 years, weakens the states' power to address interstate pollution problems, and allows outdated industrial facilities to avoid costly pollution-control upgrades.)

So while the big lies about the war are exposed to the light, the Bush team is quietly working in the shadows-chipping away at programs for veterans, the young, the old, and the poor-funneling every possible dollar into their giant war machine so it will eventually end up in the pockets of friends and family. That is compassionate conservatism at its best.

33. I'm afraid you're absolutely right
But I don't know how to stop it. Maybe the dems need to jump in and discredit Burkett, unless he can prove his case.

48. Why not wait until you understand the situation before going off
half-cocked? Democrats aren't spastic, emotionally overwrought screw-ups, like freeps.

It would be a lot better to let the matter unfold, and settle, and learn along with everyone else what the hey has happened. Where's the fire?

You can't stampede Democrats, or didn't you know that?

53. CBS has been workin on this story for 5 years
per Dan Rather. It ain't gonna be solved in 6 weeks. If the story cannot be proved then it will not sway many voters. If the dems are implicated by association or bad reporting, then it could hurt us. simple as that.

58. If the story has been in the works this long it's so unlikely
that at this juncture, Democrats are suddenly involved.

Many of us read all about Bill Burkett waaaay back in 2000 during that Presidential Campaign, when we actually imagined the winner would go to the White House.

There's nothing here that should affect Democrats or John Kerry.

39. NEWSFLASH!!! We don't want it to die!
No way these docs came from Kerry camp.

No way Rather was "snookered" by some dude from Texas.

No way anyone is behind CBS getting these other than Rove.

It's a classic set-up job.

We need to SHOUT THIS FROM THE MOUNTAINTOPS. Call every radio station, write every newspaper.

44. Generally people use "bolding" to emphasize important info.
Edited on Mon Sep-20-04 04:17 PM by JudiLyn
Just a thought. You usually see it used in connection with direct quotes from actual sources.

Can be irritating if used frivolously.

49. I like the story,
and I think Bush hates it cause it involves his being a flake, which he is.

54. I think it helps us
I love this story! Bush's numbers are falling! Each day of news is a reminder that Shrub was AWOL. It's a story that puts Arbusto on the defensive. Probably makes the Bush admin think "Maybe we don't want to do the Swiftboat thing any more..."

"From Bill Burkett's lawyer David VanOs:

"Based upon my personal knowledge of Bill Burkett's character from knowing him and knowing of his reputation among his peers, I will state unequivocally that Bill Burkett did not falsify or create the "CBS documents." I do not assume that anyone falsified or created those documents until more is known, but if anyone did, it was not Bill Burkett."
