What I just wrote on my local conservative message board...
I am involved with the local conservative radio show in my area (it's on an fm station and airs from 4-6pm so it actually gets quite a big audience)...anyways, they have a message board forum now on the web, and so its me and about 3 other liberals against about 150 conservatives...and based on the feedback I've received, especially this week, I think we are making an impact...anyways, tonight, one lady said that she trusted Bush because he's a good guy and would never lie, and challenged me to name one lie that Bush told...well, this was my response (I think her poor head will start spinning when or should I say IF she reads it!!)...

________

I'm not getting angry at all, if you want to hear insults, then you shoulda seen what the people who disagreed with the war went through a few months ago...in the case of sm, he's not mad at you, sounds like his son might be going over there...I don't have kids, but if my kid was going to go over to a place like Iraq right now, I'd be a bit pissy myself...having your kid act as a duck in a shooting gallery I’d imagine ain't fun!

Anyways...can you give examples of how the BBC was "anti-American"...saying that you watch it so that proves that it is, well, it's not the strongest argument...

No proof that Bush lied?
wow, I thought that is what this whole thread has been all about...to review for you (I'll try not to leave anything out):

- Bush said Iraq had specifically:

26,000 liters of anthrax—enough to kill several million people
38,000 liters of botulinum toxin
500 tons of sarin, mustard and VX nerve agents
Almost 30,000 munitions capable of delivering chemical agents

Umm, where are they? It's been four months now, this is longer than we gave the weapons inspectors, we have most of the scientists is custody...NONE OF THE WMDs HAVE BEEN FOUND...LIE #1...

- Niger and Uranium claims

America had received a document about this in March 2002, within a month, they sent someone to Niger and determined that the document was a forgery. After that, the British government came out with a similar dosseir, regarding the exact same forged Niger document. Bush cited the British document in his SOTU speech. Numerous CIA officials have stated on the record that the documents were forgeries, and Bush knew they were forgeries. The reason why Bush didn't cite the US one, and instead cited the British one was because if it was later proven to be false, he could blame the British. It is VERY STRANGE to cite a British document, instead of American when they both had the SAME intelligence...he did this BECAUSE the American intelligence had already determined it to be a forgery...this is not just misrepresentation, this is a LIE....LIE #2....

- Iraq links to Al Quida

Even the highest ranking AlQuida leaders that have been captured have claimed that Bin Laden ruled out working with Hussein in the early 90s!! Hussein was secular, Bin Laden is a fundamentalist...Bin Laden has called Saddam Hussein an "infidel"...Bin Laden wanted to get rid of "infidels"...the captured AlQuida leaders told the US this before the war, the US KNEW this BEFORE we went to war with Iraq that they were not linked to AlQuida! Ok, there is lie #3...

- Terror training camps in Iraq

This one reminds me of "what the definition of the word 'is' is"...OK, there was a small terrorist camp in NORTHERN KURD-controlled Iraq. It was not the chemical and biological manufacturing place that the US claimed, but needless...it was in the no-fly zone. The purpose of the no-fly zone was so that Saddam WOULD NOT have control of that area. We could literally have bombed that thing at any time and saved ourselves a war and the death of thousands. Saddam had nothing to do with it and was not in control of it. Ok, well, if you would agree that Clinton didn't actually "lie", I suppose this wasn't actually a "lie"...but if you think that Clinton lied, then here we have LIE #4...

- Nuclear program

There has been no proof of a nuclear program during the 1990s (after the 1991 war). NONE!! Inspectors confirmed that Iraq had not continued a nuclear program in their February review at the UN. Blair is in a heap o’ trouble over there in Britain he’s fighting for his political survival and hanging onto anything he can…back to nuclear weapons….Most important find, that rose bush. Conclusive proof! That little centrifuge was buried in 1990, and it was still buried in 2003. If Saddam Hussein had restarted his nuclear program, this centrifuge would have been unearthed during 1998-2002 (when the inspectors were not there)...it wasn't...btw, in order to reprocess uranium, you’d need hundreds of centrifuges, and about 750 acres of space, uhh, one centrifuge under a rosebush is no where near a nuclear program…LIE #5...

-Aluminum tubes for centrifuges for nuclear weapons

Well, the measurements of the tubes showed that they were not useful for nuclear weapons, but for conventional weapons just liked Iraq had claimed. The International Atomic Energy Agency said the specification for the tubes indicate they were intended to be used in manufacturing rockets (which was ALLOWED under UN sanctions)…NOT nuclear weapons…LIE #6…

-Iraq was an imminent threat to the security of the US

How? What is the proof? They were no imminent threat!! Sanctions had worn them down, they were no threat to the US THEN…but combine the US being a unilateral bully to the world with an invasion of a muslim country, and boom, you got a lot of pissed off Arabs, and a great recruiting tool for AlQuida!! There’s nothing like a pre-emptive invasion for false reasons to make these people hate the US even more!! Some of the world’s leading terror experts are saying that the invasion of Iraq has made the the world LESS SAFE Check out this article:
http://www.upi.com/view.cfm?StoryID=20030709-064421-3832r
There we got LIE #6, though this should be 7 and 8, since not only were they NOT an imminent threat, but this has also made the world less safe!

- Bush declared the war was over on May 1

Since then, more than 60 US servicemen have died, they get shot at about 15-25 times a day, ambushes and rocket propelled grenades…two more servicemen died today…Franks told a Senate congressional hearing that the US servicemen would be there for approximately 4 more years…LIE #8.5…

- Money, the cost of the war
The war was budgeted at 80 billion (more than the entire federal education budget if you were curious)…this phase was budgeted to cost approximately $2 billion a day, well, it’s costing $3.9 billion a day, nearly double what was budgeted…and our federal budget deficit gets even bigger….LIE #9.5….

Ok, a few other random things…

Most of the “recent intel” that the US talked about in the lead up for war was provided by Chalabi…who had vested interests in getting Hussein out of power, because he wanted to get in power…he gave specific details before the invasion, since the invasion, he hasn’t been so helpful. The US should have been checking and rechecking his claims, but they didn’t because he was saying what they wanted to hear….

Most of those mass graves are either from the Iraq-Iran war (we supported Iraq in that one BTW)…or bodies from the mass uprising in 1991? That’s a fun story, Bush (41) told the Shi’ites to rise up against Saddam after the Gulf War, and that we would support them, then we realized that a Shi’ite fundamentalist government might be worse than Saddam, so we didn’t support them…Saddam put down the uprising, but we are in part to blame, because we encouraged them to rise up and didn’t support them…

The chemical weapons were given to Iraq by the US to use against Iran…

The mobile weapons “labs” had zero evidence of biological or chemical weapons in them…wanta know why, cause they weren’t mobile weapons labs at all….they were mobile trucks sold to them by Great Britain for the purpose of inflating artillery balloons with hydrogen ...want some links? Here ya go:
http://www.commondreams.org/headlines03/0615-02.htm
http://www.unobserver.com/layout5.php?id=921&blz=1

the Bush administration refuses to acknowledge this because it’s the only thing they have to go on, but well, it’s still a lie…that’s what, LIE #10.5?

Want more?
Hussein Kamal was the most cited Iraqi defector. He was cited by Powell in his UN speech…referring to the number of weapons Iraq had before the Gulf war…but wanta know what Powell LEFT OUT of his speech, this:

In an official transcript of Kamal's interviews he stated that "All chemical weapons were destroyed…All weapons - biological, chemical, missile, nuclear were destroyed."

Wanta see it? Here you go!!
http://www.fair.org/press-releases/kamel.pdf

I believe that is LIE #11.5?

It’s hard to keep track, there are just so damn many…I probably missed a few, if I think of them, I’ll be sure to let you know…

Putting this large number of words into perspective, you asked me to show how Bush lied, and I gave you 11.5 reasons, almost an even dozen….as I’ve shown, the Bush administration has lied about just about every part of this war, thousands of people have died, and our servicemen are stuck there for at least 4 more years…I should be mad, you should be mad, SM should be mad, all Americans should be mad!!

Would be interested to hear your thoughts…

2. one is the lonliest number
Nobody can list just one. My favorite is from before the election:
"The Bush tax cuts benefit all Americans, but reserve the greatest percentage reduction for the lowest income families." dated 12/1/99 Quoted by Begala.

That was on his website, and on at least one TV ad which I saw. This clearly established him as a liar, and anyone who will lie about something as verifiable as math, cannot be trusted to ever tell the truth.

4. technically it is not a lie
lowest income families paying tax would get virtually 100% tax cut...but old Dick Cheney or someone at his income level gets only 8%tax cut. But........in actual $$$$ the rich get richer and the poor get a couple hundred bucks to spend at WalMart or on artificially raised electric and natural gas bills.

6. that is what makes it so insidious
Also, I think it was stated more boldly on the website and the ad, without explicitly saying "percentage".
Certainly, the "all Americans" part is a lie since lots of Americans got a goose egg from his tax cut plan.
And you know how those anti-civil-liberties people hate to let a guilty person off on a technicality. Does that not stand out as a deliberate attempt to mislead and misinform?

8. very good
Unfortunately, you can't really argue with them. Since what they think has no grounding in reality, reality becomes an unacceptable intrusion.

9. I disagree with at least one point (couple of other nitpicks)
Edited on Fri Jul-11-03 06:26 AM by tinnypriv
* Saying that "the sanction wore them down" is outrageous slander towards the people of Iraq. Sorry, but that's a fact. If Iraq had the capability to ecnomically embargo the United States and prevent import of essential medicines, and that policy killed pro-rata about 5 million American children, would you think it acceptable for Iraqi's to say "the Americans have been worn down"? I doubt it.

* $3.9bn a month, not a day.

* The US wasn't especially worried about a "fundamentalist" regime talking over in 1991. It was worried that the Iraqi people would take over. The rebellion was mostly organised by secular Iraqi generals.

* The chemical weapons Iraq used were supplied by Russia and other western nations, was well as the US.

The rest is very good.

10. Fact check.#3.9 Billion was for a month.
Check me on this, believe it came out almost the exact amount of the estimated federal budget for 1 year.

Stupendous article. Rates 5.
