It's the conservative mentality that generally believes striking, beating, and humiliating children is an effective way of parenting. It's not.

Republicans not Democrats are the party of spanking. It's been liberal thinking child psychologists that have championed nurturing children instead of corporal punishment.

My guess is that bastard learned at an early age that aggressive behavior will get you what you want. He was probably beaten as a child, beats his children, has taken a whack or two at his wife and watched his old man knock his mother around.

Especially with the notion that spanking a child is in any way the same as striking, beating, or humiliating.

I'm a Democrat, and I will use a well timed spank we needed. The condition under which I decided that nominal spankings would be an acceptable tool of last result was that I would also give them a lot of love every chance I get, never speak down to them, and encourage them in all ways, especilly when they are trying to act decently. My oldest boy is 15, the time when kids are usually locked in an emotional shell to which their parents are never given access. Yet he and I have no problem giving each other a "guy" hug, we tell each other "I love you" every a day, and we talk about what goes on in his head. Of course, we argue too. More than I care to admit. But we give each other space, and we are both quick to try to build bridges when things get rough.

Of course, the 15 year old doesn't get spanking anymore. He's much too old. He gets grounded, or "denials of priveledges" now. In fact, my 9 year old rarely gets a spanking either. He gets extra chores and groundings. He's gotten perhaps one spanking in the last year, and that was under an extreme circumstance.

My 5 year old gets a spank only if he's completely out of control. Before he gets a spank, he gets a three count "1,2,3." If the count goes by ignored, he gets punished, and we let him know the punishment in advance.

"If you dont stop cutting Mom's flowers, you'll get a time out. 1,2,3"

"This is the 3rd time today, son. If you don't stop jumping on your Brother's back you'll get a spanking. 1,2,3"

I rarely get to three.

If I ever have to give a spanking, I let them calm down, and then I give them a talk and a hug. I never tell them nonsense things like they are stupid or worthless, or speak to them or treat them in such a way as to make them feel that they don't deserve the very best that the world can offer.

My kids are polite, well behaved, and never fight with other kids. They are never rude to adults, they never bully other children, and they don't even let other kids be mean to bugs! My kids understand that they are loved, they like themselves, and they are at peace with other people. Spanking has NEVER interrupted that mentallity.

Corporal punishments do not chill the hearts of young children. Lack of love and affection does. If you have children, and you can get by without ever spanking them, then God bless you. If you can't, then you make sure you give them twice as much affection as any other parent normally would, and never hold back the love.

the reactions are completely different.

The Kerry incident shows a reaction to a disruption that in the heat of the moment might have seemed dangerous. A man suddenly shouting angrily might ellicit a first response to grab hold of him in the event he's doing more than protesting. They then seem to lead him away by his arms as one would expect. No desire to injure or humiliate in that photo from my point of view.

In the Bush situation, the young gal is obviously no threat but a protester. Gripping her hair with a satisfied grin and continuing to drag her by it when she is not resisting is simply in the mind of that sicko creep, teaching her a lesson about what anyone that disagrees with the assailant deserves.
