GOP Hypocrisy on Food Taxes
2 years ago the National Taxpayers Union (a GOP front group) attacked a South Carolina Democratic governor for proposing a one cent sales tax on food.

Now the same group is praising a South Carolina Republican Congressman for proposing a 23 PERCENT TAX ON FOOD.

It's happening in the SAME state (South Carolina) its the same tax (sales tax) on the SAME ITEM (food). But the Democratic proposal was horrible and the GOP proposal is just fine.

1. 23% seems a bit steep for any tax
What's the whole story on this? Is it restaurant and fast food, or is 9t groceries?

If these jokers ever got it, the GOP would be out of power in SC forever.

2. it's a national sales tax
Rep. Jim DeMint has proposed a 23 percent national sales tax to replace the income tax. His stated intent is to make people "feel the cost of government".

5. This Has Got To Be Intentional Grandstanding
Nobody in their right mind would suggest a 23% tax on necessities, starting at zero dollars. They must be suggesting this as a way to leverage a "See we were right. Even the democrats don't really want to tax people. They are just bowing to special interests when they raise taxes."

If my speculation is wrong, then whoever proposed this plan, needs to be committed to the nearest psychiatric facility.

6. He proposed a 23% tax on everything,
not just food. It's similar to the VAT tax used in many European countries. It's definitely a stupid idea, but just saying he proposed a 23% tax of food is disingenuous.

7. yes, but
the same people who screamed about a 1-percent tax on food now praise a 23-percent tax on food (and everything else)
