1. What Europe, New Zealand, Australia and all those "unfree"
countries have. Along with the lower murder rates and incarceration rates that go with those darn gun regulations.

3. What do they have?
because most every other country seems to have such lower murder rates than US.
It seems to be working for them...
I'll take what they have as well.

20. They have much stronger gun laws and enforcement
We copy their cars and fashions, why not their superior gun laws?

21. Or maybe borrow their superior attitudes towards social
safety nets, education, health care, and so forth so we don't create crime problems in the first place? Just a thought.

5. It means
to me at least keeping guns out of the hands of criminals, not sportsmen or other avid hunters. I don't see why someone needs an AK or a other assualt rifle, machine gun or anything like that in their house.

IF freepers feel the need for those, they should join the military. Then they would be in heaven because they would have all the machine guns and people to kill then.

The gun issue is and has been blown out of perportion many times over and now it's a wedge issue for the GOP.

6. I'd like to see
a ban on assault rifles (the current proposal before the Senate and the House seems pretty good to me).

the gun show loophole closed (in a majority of states, thugs, loonies and other charmers can buy guns at gun shows without background checks).

Registration of guns and licensing of gun owners. Ammunition sales recorded and restricted to those who can produce a valid license.

Congressional hearings on gun industry marketing and sales practices.

8. Gun control means keeping firearms out of the hands of
children, felons and lunatics. It means licensing guns so they can be traced when they are stolen and when they are used to hurt people instead of tin cans or meat animals.

We have the right to bear arms. We don't have the right to do so irresponsibly.

9. Gun Control for me
Guns should be licensed. Permit, extensive background check, and safety training required prior to purchase.

Database of weapons (heard about this, gun is shot before being sold and the "imprint" is filed in case the weapon is used in a crime, don't know a lot about it though).

Trigger lock required with weapon purchase.

No loopholes for gun shows or private sales.

Severe punishment for those who sell weapons illegally.

No assault or automatic weapons (who needs this stuff, really?).

Armor piercing ammunition not generally available.

I don't believe in banning guns, but I don't get why so many people believe regulation of weapons equals bans.

12. I disagree with most here on gun control
Edited on Wed Aug-25-04 08:38 AM by EstimatedProphet
I don't think that banning guns will have an effect on violence in our society. Bowling for Columbine made the point (very well IMO) about the US murder rate being higher than other countries where gun ownership is isn't restricted-Canada comes to mind. Banning guns is simply attacking the symptom of a disease which desperately needs to be addressed, and if we simply ban guns and then dust off our hands and say "problem solved", then the issues which are driving gun deaths will show up in other areas.

On edit: So-
Rifles allowed (including "assault weapons", because the definition in the Congressional bill is not an effective definition)
Handguns allowed
Fully automatic weapons not allowed
Pretty much like it is today.

Wouldn't you feel safer knowing the probability of people around you don't have pistols....
I mean, you can pretty much tell if someone has a rifle....or at has on a huge trench coat...

17. I understand what you are saying, but no
because I think that a person who is likely to go off is someone to be wary of, whether or not they are carrying a handgun. You can get just as dead from a knife. Until we really get serious about finding out why we have so many people in this country that are ready to snap, we'll never truly address the murder rate problem. Controls on guns are just window dressing in my opinion.
Given that I also don't personally believe in the concealed carry laws that are popping up all over the place. I will grant you this-handguns make it easier for someone to shoot someone else in reaction to something. But if we get rid of the concealed carry laws, we will IMO curb some of the Joe Vigilante ideal that is likely to get someone shot, because someone with a handgun saw something they thought was a threat.

14. Trigger and muzzle control
a firm grip and a weaver stance ;)

Gun control is about control, not guns. Its born of fear and pandering, and is fed by relentless propaganda and misinformation. It can only exist if the masses remain ignorant and afraid.

Tools to make weapons safer, trigger locks, speed safes etc are a good idea. Background checks dont work and I dont see how they ever will. There is no such thing as the "gun show loophole". That is misinformation put out by the gun control lobby and used by politicians to garner support/votes. The AWB is a joke and even the VPC has acknowledged it.

If you want to control something, control drug and alcohol abuse, control poverty and living standards, control education and job creation. Stop the drug prohibition and we wont need to be so focused on gun prohibition.

16. It is a great "lookie here!!!" issue that politicians employ
when they lack some combination of will or ability to tackle the problems of which gun violence is one symptom. Both Republicans and Democrats ride this issue for all it is worth, mainly around election time, and the only losers are the people.

BTW, you are pretty. :)

26. I'm not so sure about that....
I think it means that bad people will have a harder time getting guns legally; good people will be sanctioned for making it easier for bad people to take the good peoples guns or allowing other good people to hurt themselves with guns; and that good people could really hurt bad people if those bad people were out to hurt those specific good people (which is easier for bad people, when the nearest person society pays to be a good person is fifty miles away, or the nearest person society pays to be a good person is on another call, or couldn't give a shit about a possible B&E in an area filled with poor good people)

23. It means a Dem election loss
I am in Texas, after all. We've had many good liberal Texas politicians who were against most forms of gun control. But I sometimes get the feeling on this site that our Texas Dems would be shunned in favor of RWers like Henry Hyde, just because he supports Sarah Brady. Crazy.

And as Roving Gourmet so succinctly stated, it means an excuse for all politicians to ignore the REAL problems of our society which lead to all kinds of violence, not just gun violence. You know, things such as the lack of a quality education or educational opportunities, the lack of high paying jobs, the lack of a family/gov'tal/other support system, the lack of hope in many communities, etc. But *those* issues can't be boiled down to the 10 word catch phrase so popular with Americans and American politicians. :eyes:
