I was actually called a "commie pinko" by a Bushite!
I loved it.
(meant to check in wi/news of Bush's st. paul appearance sooner, but occupied like mad 'til now)
My wife was kind enough to make a fine sign that said "Bush Lied, Thousands Died" for me to wave autside the Bush talk at Xcel Arena in St. Paul Thursday. I joined about 200 -- that may be generous -- demonstrators on the corner on Seventh to generate some heat. I missed the speeches by R. T. Rybak and Max Cleland, but the Xcel folks were kind enough to put the Bush pool camera shot on the jumbotron outside. So we could see the Bushistas inside but didn't have to listen to the pretend ruler.
It was exciting....a real diverse crowd, and multi=generational too.
The Bush crowd's buses came right past, had a little trouble negotiating the turn in front of Xcel so we got to chant at them for quite a while. Also, walked down to Exchange and chestnut, guessed right, along with about two dozen others, that the caravan would come by.
I had my camera.
"Try and get a photo of him giving us the bird," a guy said.
I agreed that would be a cherised heirloom to pass on to my kids.
But the windows were tinted so darkly that Bush could've mooned us and I couldn't have gotten the shot. Oh, well.

Now the good part: walking back to the cars, suddenly the streets are filled with people who had been INSIDE Xcel. They're walking to their cars toting 'bush=cheney' bumper stickers and posters etc. I of course, still have my sign under my arm, yet perfectly readable.
Two Hassidic fellows passed by.
"if you had your way," one of them said, "you'd be speaking German and i'd be dead."
"How in the world does that follow?" I asked him. I was about to go into something about "deserter from the Alabama N.G." and Pat Robertson only being interested in Jews so he can convert them, but the fellow had gotten off his one-liner and was already hurrying across the street.
At this time a car full of people pulled away from a stop light. A guy in the passenger seat rolled his window down.
"You're a commie pinko!" he shouted, his voice hoarse from hollering inside the building.
"That's so '60s!" I said. "Thank You!."
There was a female cop taking all this in from the corner.
"Doncha love free speech?" I asked her.
"Sure do."
There's more, but I gotta go.

1. But blind ideological obedience to an authoritarian figure is
not a hallmark of Maoism, right? I'm sure they have a lot more in common with the followers of Mao than we do.

5. and the followers of Hitler for that matter
much more in common than we will ever have. Hells bells, hard to get three liberals to agree on anything, let along be obedient.

8. Hey, MnFats, I took lots of abuse yesterday, too.
Was at a Mountain Days (think Appalachian) festival in Dayton, selling Kerry/Edwards T-shirts, bumper stickers, yard signs and registering people to vote.

My co-chair and I felt safe because the event was sponsored by the AFL-CIO and their booth was passing out K-E info. We set up our display on the road into the event, in an area with a few parking spaces so that people could pull over to get our stuff.

Most of the folks were either interested and stopped by or not interested at all and drove past. This is the mid-west, remember, where we're supposed to have good manners and be polite to one another.

Ha! The few Shrub supporters who were militant just about ruined my day. We were laughed at, threatened -- one guy backed his van (covered with B-C04 stickers) into our area and I thought he was going to run over us -- yelled at and were the targets for lots of obscene gestures. The one that really upset me was a child in a car with a toy guy; his father encouraged him to shoot at us.

We just smiled and told them to have a nice day.

Oh well, we're pure of heart and can take it, can't we?

12. they are obssessed with communism
and that is really funny. Where on earth do these people live and in what era? They are living in the fifties. Communism as was known then and as was the total enemy of the US is no longer. They fear giving their money to those who they deem below them in class, even though a lot of them are nothing but cheap white trash. Why should they pay for a black man to have a much needed operation and is on Medicare?

I bet that all of them have at least ten items in their homes that were made in China.

14. It's their ultimate insulting phrase.
Harkens back to their glory days when McCarthy was dividing our country in two. The fact that it is neither descriptive nor relevant in defining us is beside the point. That can't figure out what to really call us, so they revert to meaningless labels. Calling us Democrats or liberals or progressives just dosen't convey the right level of invective to them.

(to Wisconsin's shame imo), J. Edgar Hoover, the Dulles brothers, Richard Nixon and the Operation PAPERCLIP Nazis were battling godless communism-we were the original atomic war kids.

Our fathers fought against what is in the BFEE-we've all been betrayed.

Fuck calling someone a commie pinko.

ALL ANTI-FASCISTS--FOLLOW ME!

17. Just show how unoriginal they are that they're dragging out
"insults" from the 50's and 60's. "commie", "pinko", "wild eyed liberal". Someone at work recently called me a "bleeding heart liberal". I told them I couldn't deny it, but truth be told, at one time in my life I had dreams of becoming a "limosine liberal". A goal I have not achieved.

19. Ooh- "commie pinko". You found a real dinosaur there.
I'm still expecting some of them to call me a "dad-gum rustlin' horse thief" or something. Seems like some of them haven't had an original or critical thought for decades. Maybe never.

Those people are so behind the times. "Commie pinko" is obsolete. "Terrorist sympathizer" is the more up-to-date term.
