Oil's at an all time high but gas prices dropped 30 cents in my area?
I couldn't believe it today when I saw unleaded was down to a buck, 68...

Someone help me with this. How can unleaded gas prices in Florida drop almost 30 cents from 2 bucks a gallon a couple of months back with world oil prices at record levels? Are the big Gasoline companies keeping it down to help Bush?

It seems to me that when Oil has gone up so has the Gas? What's up?

1.95 IS Down for California
It has only dropped about 15 cents from the peak,
but Bush*'s friends have no incentive to lower the price here,
we still aren't going to vote for him.

3. They will prop the price as long as they can.
but the first wave of serious pressure will hit them at the close of the convention. After the first week in Sept., it will be all arm twisting and promises from *.

4. trumad: the local gas taxes in the state have been set aside for the month
a 'temporary tax holiday' or some such blather. There should be a notice posted where you buy gas

5. You're right to question
Here in TX it is 1.73 which is much lower then it peaked which was 1.93 a few months ago.. For those that don't believe the oil companies like the shrub this is the best evidence..

10. Time for a Tinfoil Hat Theory
Edited on Sun Aug-22-04 07:35 PM by Labor_Ready
I notice that two of the respondents reporting lower prices live in hotly-contested states: Florida and Arizona. I live in a red state and very close to another red state, Indiana. Prices have RISEN in both these states over the past couple of weeks from ~$1.65 to ~$1.77. One respondent from Texas reported lower prices, but that may be an aberration in my theory.

I'd like to hear from others in different areas of the country to see if there is any correlation between lowered/elevated gas prices over the past couple of weeks and red/blue/tossup status.

12. It's down in Connecticut, too.
It had been hovering around $2.00 (at the cheapest place around here), and I was amazed to find it $1.89 today. So maybe it's not only in the swing states.... But this needn't mean there's no manipulation. Maybe they can't confine it to just certain target states for some reason to do with how they market gas?

13. Good Point
I have no doubt that some price manipulation is going on, however. In order to finance these artificially low prices, something had to give, and I believe it was allowed to rise in my region because it's considered safe repug country.

16. Mmmmmm
The u.s. consumes 360m gallons of petrol per day.

http://money.howstuffworks.com/gas-price1.htm

So if the oil companies wanted to subsidize the price of petrol by $0.10 for a month, it would cost them between $0.5bn and $1bn (I think).

(I like this howstuffworks site, I've been there before I think finding out succesfully and easily how many ships in a aircraft carrier group)
