New York's Republican Mayor
I'm from California, so I'm not up on New York politics. But, I'm wondering something....if New York City is so liberal, and NY state is showing overwhelming support for Kerry in the polls, how does New York City end up with all of the Republican mayors?

9. Nor was it the case in california.
The reason republicans win office in both Cali and New York is that the republicans get on the ballot, and spend money and advertise, and then politics takes over. The republicans run as democrat-lite in new york. they win the same way democrats win in the south. People vote for people in elections, not parties, as stupid as it is.

Bloomberg should have lost, but it was a very odd election, and the democrats beat each other up in the primaries.

People are willing to consider voting for the other guy, just like in california.

11. I would still argue
That if Arnold was a non-movie star that looked more like Larry David, he would not be our governor.

3. Three reasons...
1. David Dinkins

2. Post Rudy Giuliani

3. Bloomberg is actually a lifelong Democrat who only changed party affiliation in order to run for office in 2001.

8. Welcome to DU nycmjkfan
P.S. I'd throw in Ed Koch, who has been ambivalent about being a true democrat since Day One.

5. Spent $94 per vote
Bloomberg lost any credibility with me when he fliped-flopped from a Democrat to a Republican to run for office...and he sucks as a mayor...not sure how Pataki ended up there, but I used to live in CT and we had 2 Democratic Senators and a Republican Governor...weird

12. Well...
Bloomberg did flip-flop, but if you look at his cabinet it is littered with many Democrats.

NY wanted a businessman for Mayor after 9/11, and that's the main reason Bloomberg won. Considering what he was up against, post 9/11, I actually think he's done a pretty good job.

He has also stood up against his "fellow" GOP folks, particularly when it comes to post 9/11 terrorism funding for NYC.

The mere fact that the right wing rag known as the NY Post trash him any chance they get, gives you an indication as to where he leans.
