Scholars Say Campaign Is Making History With Often-Misleading Attacks

It was a typical week in the life of the Bush reelection machine.

Last Monday in Little Rock, Vice President Cheney said Democratic presidential candidate John F. Kerry "has questioned whether the war on terror is really a war at all" and said the senator from Massachusetts "promised to repeal most of the Bush tax cuts within his first 100 days in office."

1. The war on terror is NOT a war, it's a profit center for BushCo.

I don't understand. Is Cheney now campaigning FOR Kerry?

I guess a Conservative would consider those negative things but I doubt any liberal would. It isn't a war in the real sense of the word. It is a criminal matter. War is between two or more Nation States. War is not against an ideology or a culture. And I hope Kerry does repeal the tax cuts for the extremely wealthy within a hundred days.

on Kerry during the campaign.

4. They'll keep throwing mud up on the walls and some will stick.

A little here a little there, and pretty soon, they've succeeded. A lot of people here smugly sit back and laugh at them for this, but it is working.

The sad truth is, negative attacks work. They work especially well in creating doubt about the opponent. That is precisely what BushCo needs to do to Kerry and they are scoring points daily.

I remember when liberals rolled their eyes at Willie Horton. President Dukakis remembers too. I remember when we dismissed Gore the "serial liar" attacks. President Gore remembers too.

Negative ads strengthen your base and create doubt in the middle. Contrary to the conventional wisdom, they don't cost you undecided votes. We Democrats better figure that out fast, or Kerry is going down.
