(Completed) BBC poll on world's opinion of America
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/shared/spl/hi/programmes/wtwta/poll/html/political/general.stm

The BBC hosted a unique global television debate about America's place in the world with 10 other national broadcasters.

As part of the What The World Thinks of America programme, 11,000 people in the UK, France, Russia, Indonesia, South Korea, Jordan, Australia, Canada, Israel, Brazil and the US responded to a poll asking their views and opinions on America.

The respondents were asked about their general attitudes towards America and US President George Bush.

The poll also posed a range of other questions on America's foreign policy, military power, cultural influences and economic might.

8. To borrow from Ben-Hur:
Rome is an affront to God. Rome is strangling my people and my country and the whole earth, but not forever. I tell you, the day Rome falls, there will be a shout of freedom such as the world has never heard before.

Substitute 'Bush' for 'Rome,' and it about gets the world's attitude right.

4. Israel's support for the U.S. seems quite low....considering.
Wonder what that's all about? Did we miss a payment last month or something?

The rest are completely predictable.

11. How do you interpret this graph --
is the world saying they are not scared of the US (in favor of the statement) or what?

13. Let's see:
An average -31 on America scares me, so 65.5% not scared, 34.5% scared.

12. Very astute point, snyttri
Will the electorate know that just by replacing Bush it will immediately... be easier to get international help in Iraq and Afghanistan?

This could be an important talking point for the Democratic candidate.

It would also go a long way toward showing how WEAK the Republicans really are on defense and foreign affairs.

Running around in a fighter suit does not a leader make. Just shows how Bush really understands his role is still that of cheerleader. (Note: He WAS a cheerleader at Andover.)

Get the cheerleader off the field and let a real statesman steer.

17. I am encouraged by the 40-odd point spread ...
between the attitude toward Bush and the attitude toward the U.S. in general.

It DOES mean that just a regime change would make a big difference. Of course I do not believe that's all that is needed, by a long shot.

16. You just HAD to say that, didn't you?
NOTHING pisses me off more than the fact that the American public bought that line. Thank (well, I'm an agnostic, so thank nobody) that I can at least claim to have voted for Gore.

I absolutely have to live in this country for another 12 years (that's when the gov't pension kicks in). I'm almost absolutely leaving then, regardless of the political climate (Costa Rica calls). I'd like to be able to make some difference here in the 12 years I have left. As long as the average American pays more attention to cute phrases than issues, it's never going to happen.

As a side rant: Is anybody else convinced that we're (Americans) resting on our laurels? If so, isn't that REALLY dangerous right about now?

I give up. Discuss, if you wish.

15. Truly frightening how deluded this nation is...
Eighty-eight percent think that the rest of the world loves us?

So when Bush hits the campaign trail and speechifies about "we are a great and compassionate people" with nothing but "freedom" on our minds when we invade other countries, four out of five Americans will nod their heads in agreement?

21. Im keeping THIS graph for the next time
I hear some dipshit say " THE US IS THE BEST COUNTRY IN THE WORLD EVERYONE WANTS TO COME HERE"

I wish the BBC would poll us...and ask us if we want to live here.

19. 'Clinton makes us a disgrace in the eyes of the world' was a hot talking
point for the GOP in Lewinskygate. How do you get the electorate to realize the world thinks the GOP is nuts for impeaching a Presint over his private life?

20. Have you ever heard an elected Dem tell the truth about Bush and security?
Do any Democrats even mention that Bush is making the world hate us?

Not some wimpy crap about his policies, but saying it right out that Bush is making the world hate America.

Why did terrorists attack us? Because they hate us.

What should we do in response?

Make more people hate us?

Democrats need to speak up and start making some connections for the American people.

We are not safer when we are more hated.

It is ranked the highest in respect for USA, above UK. Yet somehow many here feel compelled to bash Canada.
