Nice girl came to the house
A young girl knocked on our door this evening. I figured she was selling something but she had a petition. It non-partisan and was to get local council districts on the ballot in our town in November. This is important because, at least here where we live, at large district tend to disenfranchise segments of the population. What made me sad was that when she found she'd knocked on a door of people who were interested, willing to sign and just not rude to her she was ecstatic. She couldn't get anyone even to sign the thing to get on the ballot. She was very sweet, intelligent, personable and not pushy and I can't think of a reason in the world for anyone to have been rude, but apparently people were. She wasn't even soliticing donations. She said that she wanted a summer job that did some good instead of flipping burgers. So, we all signed, talked with her a while and thanked her for what she's doing.

I know I don't have to ask anyone here to support young people who are concerned and trying to make a difference, but if you know anyone who might slam the door on a young face like this, ask them not to, OK?

1. I had a DNC volunteer come to my door
I gave him $25 and a big thanks.

Of course, he did spy the Impeach Bush sign I have in my window so he knew I probably wasn't going to be hostile.

3. What crap....If you don't care to sign her petition, fine, there's no
need to be nasty. Why go out of your way to make someone's day unpleasant?

I even try to have fun with telemarketers, telling them I'm just housesitting for the "occupant" who is on sabbatical working for the Kerry campaign.

7. I'm generally not rude.. But..
Years and years of having solicitors, mostly of the religious stripe, knock on my door (despite big signs that say "No Solicitors") and wake me up -- (While I had a job that required me to work at night) My tolerance for unwelcome knocks at the door, and telemarketers, for that matter, is admittedly low.

I've got one of these on my door:

As well as one of these right over the doorbell:

And I still get the occasional Mormon or magazine salesman.
I'm really not an anti-social misanthrope (mostly) but after a decade or so of being solicited and telemarketed to death, I've just about had it. Sorry.
