1. What did you expect?
From this racist, Jew-hating Nazi sympathizer?

BTW, he's squarely amongst the "Chickenhawk Brigade."

He got out of the draft with a "bum knee."

Yet this asshole jogs every day.

3. A friend suggested I read it and so I am doing that
But I will say this--anyone who respects Buchanan here should read that book. Yes Buchanan may have some (very few) valid positions on Foreign Policy issues, but that book makes it clear that he is no one to respect or to defend.

2. Could you write more about that?
About the book, not about vomiting.

5. Here is what the thesis is in a nutshell
Minorities are having more babies and they are going to take over the white populations of Americans and Europe. Everything bad in America happened in the 1960s, which, of course, corresponds with the Civil Rights Era. Women should work in "pink collar" professions and stay at home while having six babies to replace the declining white population.

Buchanan rags on for pages at a time about how whites are under siege. The whole book fills itself with language that contains significant racial overtones.

For decades anthropologists have denounced the concept of race. Morons on the right won't let the facts get in their way.

The biological concept of race . . . has no basis in science.
Dr. Harold Freeman, Celera Genomics Corp., quoted in the SJ Mercury, "Race not seen as factor in variation of genetic code," Feb. 20, 2001, G1.

8. The enemy of my enemy is not always my friend
Buchanan is no friend of any Democrat. That he dislikes the current crop of crazies doesn't mean he's in our camp.

10. Sexism
He attacks feminism and thinks women should stay at home and make babies. He also attacks the cultural war.

13. Why Are You Reading That Crap?
He's a jew bashing, gay bashing, immigrant bashing fascist just as his father was.

Here's some far better non-fiction reading material and I promise that you won't vomit, Carlos when reading any of the below:

Howard Zinn's "A People's History of the United States"

Emma Goldman's "Living My Life"

Paco Ignacio Taibo's "Ernesto Guevara also know as El Che"

WJ Cash's "The Mind Of The South"

Patrick Renshaw's "The Wobblies: The Story of Iww and Syndicalism in the United States"

Richard Rodriguez's "Brown: The Last Discovery Of America"

WEB DuBois's "The Souls of Black Folk"

Frederick Douglas'"Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass, An American Slave"

John Hope Franklin's "Reconstruction after the Civil War"

I read conservative books from time to time so that I can listen to other viewpoints.

15. don't bother
They are either shills of the BFEE or ignorant racist morons. I tried for years to be sypmathetic to opposing viewpoints and learned they are not valid. I wish they were. I don't mind an intelligent informed debate but these guys are not worth your time.

18. What Progressive Books Do You Read?
Carlos, I know you are a "reader" because I notice that from time to time you post what you are reading. I like that about you and frankly, would like to see more book conversations here at the DU. And in spite of my sparring with you here a lot in the past two years over your conservative views, I always have respected that you are well read for your youthful age and wish more young people were like you in this regard. Also, I recognize that you were one of the very first Howard Dean supporters here at the DU...long before me, so I also want to acknowledge that.

Books are the only gift that I offer to friends on holidays and special occasions. I especially love to give high school and university age young women and men books to read while their hearts and minds are so fresh and vital.

You have posted here that you have read Keven Philips' "Politics of Wealth" and had praise for it (I thought it was too long and seemed like an apology of sorts). I also know that you hated Michael Moore's "Stupid White Men" (I found it entertaining and a lot of fun).

Have you read any of the books I listed above? If so, I'd really like to hear your thoughts on them.

What are some of the more progressive books that you have read and truly enjoyed?
