Pretty bad when we are hearing best of shows with less than 5 months of broadcast. They need more talent to sub in for the gaps.

5. I have NEVER heard a best of during the week
unless the host was on vacation. I have been listening pretty much everyday of the week since early April.

16. That's the POINT... vacation?? after only a few months???
Edited on Sun Aug-08-04 09:45 PM by SoCalDem
There are plenty of liberal hosts (Guy James comes to mind)who would GLADLY broadcast (probably for next to NO COST)...and it would give AAR a ready reserve of "talent" when their "stars" get bored...or something else they are interested in, distracts them..

AAR is making a HUGE mistake in not using their time more wisely..

They are a nicher station, whether they realize it or not, and they NEED their loyal listeners.. If they start tuning in and heraing re0runs, they will get tired of it soon..and lose their habit

17. With limited budgets I assume they still have
They maybe just sacrificing a little. I agree they should add some more programming, and I wish they would get alan colms off. Why put a faux news(if you want to call it that) on in the evening hours. Jebus people, that right there alone may be the cause for some people not listening. I turn it around that time to another XM radio channel I can't stand it so much.

The only one I know for sure off the top of my head went on a vacation not long ago was Ed Schultz. I could be mistaken too since I am about to fall asleep right now :P ......

They do need more programming but saying they are going to fail so soon I still believe is sort of pessimistic. I mean, Al Franken alone is beating the shit out of O'Rielly and probably if not already the Ditto-Head Pill Popper himself, Limbaugh in arbitron ratings. I am sure right wing radio had its bumpy start too before it became a powerful force. We just are seeing a similar struggle in our long journey to the TOP! don't be sad, be glad.

25. You know, I didn't know that
well learn something new everyday, though I kind of new my AAR programming cut off around that time, that's why I said more programming would be nice so he would be knocked off on the XM radio on 167.

Kerry on!

33. Ed Schultz is part of AAR?
Really? I ask because he's on here in WV (which in of itself is a shock) so maybe there's hope we could get AAR full-time. Maybe? I thought Schultz was independent or something.

26. It's the slogan of the "AAR is still going to fail dammit" crowd
Edited on Sun Aug-08-04 11:16 PM by Ducks In A Row
it was the complaint earlier this weekend when Randi stayed home sick. The woman was coughing and losing her voice, but for some that's no excuse. She was supposed to work herself into walking pneumonia.

12. LA is being rumored (as always)
Posted on another thread:

I poke around a few radio boards and I've seen some rampant rumors about AAR affiliates.

Some (and these are just rumors, but do make some sense):

WRLL (1690) Chicago
KOY (1340) Phoenix
KPOP (1360) San Diego
WTNT (570) Washington, DC
KLAC (570) Los Angeles

The Chicago, Washington and LA signals are owned by Clear Channel, who has had great success in Portland and is trying it out in Miami.

Speaking of Chicago...

http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/columnists/ericzorn/chi-zornlog,1,704173.story?coll=chi-news-hed

Chicagoan Fred Eychaner has long been a major Democratic fundraiser as well as a significant player behind the scenes in local media.

And, as Robert Feder reports this week, Eychaner has been reinvesting proceeds from his sale of WPWR Ch. 50 into buying up small area radio stations to be part of his Newsweb Corp. group.

That group now includes four FM and five AM stations on the local dial, which leads me to speculate in a hint-hint sort of way that one of them may soon become a home for the fledgling liberal talk network, Air America. The programming, featuring comedian/author Al Franken, was yanked from the local airwaves several months ago because of a contract dispute between the network and the owners of the station.

Newsweb's stations:

WKIE-FM (92.7)
WKIF-FM (92.7)
WDEK-FM (92.5)
WRZA-FM (99.9)
WNDZ-AM (750)
WCSN-AM (820)
WAIT-AM (850)
WSBC-AM (1240)
WCFJ-AM (1470).

27. I know, DAMMIT! I listened to the first two weeks or so before that
station in San Bernardino or wherever pulled the plug on it. One day, Al Franken. The next day, Spanish Christian music. SHEESH! And the signal was crappy, too. This is Los Angeles. They don't even have a presence in Los Angeles - the broadcasting and media capital of the country - if not the world. In the movie capital of the world. Unbelievable. Two puny weeks I think was all we got. limbaugh can be heard from above Santa Barbara to below the Mexican border and way beyond even that, on KFI - ONE SINGLE L.A. station with a huge signal. And we can't get Air America here. Ridiculous. Pathetic!

I don't want to hear about it rumored for her - I want to HEAR it here, PERIOD.

11. Hey, we all gotta take a vacation once in a while
And being a startup, it's not like they can field a full 24/7 live schedule on the weekends. Especially when talk radio listening is relatively low.

Why not plug in best-of shows? For casual dial turners, it's not a bad introduction.

There was talk of Dish Network carrying Sirius Satellite Radio channels. Dish Network started with all the Sirius music channels, but still no Sirius Left channel! Maybe if Dish Network users bugged them a little?

geeezzz, it's only been a few months since it's inception! Take vacation AFTER the election for crying out loud. This is a horrible time to relax. We NEED them. I was just getting into the whole station. Before, I liked some shows and didn't care for others. Now, I like them all and what do they do? GO ON VACATION! Just like bush.:-(

24. hahahaha
majority report is on vacation all next week

dunno about the others

wish marc and mark would take a LONG one

replace them, please

I've tried, really I have, but it's WAY too canned/programmed, especially with MM's VERY boring, very lame personal tidbits: dreams, fake presidential schedules, whatever

I switch over to the fem channel when he does that

22. As someone who works in NY radio and knows people at AAR,
the reason for the vacation this week is simple and pretty clear (as it was laid out to me):

It's gonna be the last lengthy time the hosts are gonna be able to take before the election. After this week and running especially from the week of the GOP convention here in NY, they will be on a non-stop blitz against Bush, Rove and the rest of that satanic crew. there will be the occasional day off, but this week is the one chance for a breather before the final kick. The sh*tty jobs numbers that came in Friday in addition to the defensiveness on the terror alert will keep the head baboon and his minions quite busy for this week. Malloy will be live all week and is more than capable of holding down the fort.

That is all.

30. Sounds good enough for me
So long as Malloy is there at night, it'll be fine. Just goes to show you how much people need AAR.

We always have DU to gab. And there are other great programs on that I've abandoned like Thom Hartmann. Or try one of my morning favorites, Lynn Cullen on WPTT out of Pittsburgh. Diane Rheme usually has great guests. Her archives runs deep and rich. So, while AAR is taking a breather during the daytime, I'm going to graze around my old favorites.
