A friend of mine was a war protester during Viet Nam and refused to register for the draft. The Selective Service found out about this and drafted him anyway. He still refused to serve and Military Police arrested him and took him to basic training camp where he promptly went over the hill. They again arrested him and sent him to the brig at Fort Knox.
While in there, he met a local second string NBA player (name withheld) who was in for being AWOL. His crime? Just like our pretender, he had transferred from one NG unit to a different one and just failed to show up. Seems that he had been traded from one team to another and, as part of the deal, they had his NG assignment changed too, but he just ignored the whole thing.
After a few weeks, the team's lawyers arranged his release. Of course, if he had been a star, he wouldn't have even been arrested in the first place.
My friend was released too after about six months. Later he received a discharge and the Army actually sent him a certificate of "Dishonorable Discharge" and he had it framed.
