Bush should have been in prison!
A friend of mine was a war protester during Viet Nam and refused to register for the draft. The Selective Service found out about this and drafted him anyway. He still refused to serve and Military Police arrested him and took him to basic training camp where he promptly went over the hill. They again arrested him and sent him to the brig at Fort Knox.

While in there, he met a local second string NBA player (name withheld) who was in for being AWOL. His crime? Just like our pretender, he had transferred from one NG unit to a different one and just failed to show up. Seems that he had been traded from one team to another and, as part of the deal, they had his NG assignment changed too, but he just ignored the whole thing.

After a few weeks, the team's lawyers arranged his release. Of course, if he had been a star, he wouldn't have even been arrested in the first place.

My friend was released too after about six months. Later he received a discharge and the Army actually sent him a certificate of "Dishonorable Discharge" and he had it framed.

1. Bush getting in the Guard was a crime too.
He moved ahead of hundreds of men to get into the Guard. Because Bush had connections, someone else got drafted.

2. This was common for the wealthy, well connected and
virtually all professional athletes. Danny Quayle is another good example. I used to tell my brother, who by the way was on Swift boats in 'Nam, that he took Quayle's place. I guess we really don't know if it was Quayle's or Bush's place. I asked him if he saw John Kerry over there and he said "I don't remember seeing Kerry but I know for sure that I didn't see Bush, Cheney or Rumsfeld."
