U.S. rapped for blowing spy's cover

Sat Aug 7, 7:43 AM ET Add Local - New York Daily News to My Yahoo!

BY CORKY SIEMASZKO, DAILY NEWS STAFF WRITER

A captured Al Qaeda computer whiz was E-mailing his comrades as part of a sting operation to nab other top terrorists when U.S. officials blew his cover, sources said yesterday

Within hours of Muhammad Naeem Noor Khan's name being publicized Monday, British police launched lightning raids that netted a dozen suspected Al Qaeda terrorists, including one who was nabbed after a high-speed car chase.

Among those taken into custody was Abu Eisa Al Hindi, whose scouting of the New York Stock Exchange (news - web sites), the Citigroup Center and other financial sites for possible attacks prompted the latest orange alert terror warnings.

Now British and Pakistani intelligence officials are furious with the Americans for unmasking their super spy - apparently to justify the orange alert - and for naming the other captured terrorist suspects.

10. Rated it 5. This is an unbelievable thing.
This is big. The Bushies put out a curiously timed alert. Then they get called on it and give away an important intelligence source defending themselves. I literally don't know what to say any more. I can't believe this.

13. Supposedly, US officials confirmed the name after it already was printed
in the NY Times. By then, the cover was blown anyway. We need to find out who tipped off the Times with the actual name before they went to print (and the Times ain't saying, at this point). This is how Reuters claims it went doen:

"Last Sunday, U.S. officials told reporters that someone held secretly by Pakistan was the source of the bulk of the information justifying the alert. The New York Times obtained Khan's name independently, and U.S. officials confirmed it when it appeared in the paper the next morning."

http://www.reuters.com/newsArticle.jhtml?type=topNews&storyID=5902856

It will all come out in the wash. If it turns out that a US official blabbed the name, TSWHTF.

16. The bu$h administration is in bed with Al Qaeda
Fear and Control is their stock in trade.
With any luck this can be tied back to the CIA operative Valerie Plame's outing.

This administration needs the terrorist to function. Their black & white thought process needs an enemy as a focus point, an anchor around which they swing. Eliminate that and they fly off into space.

17. This Administration Is Scary As Hell
When you go back & see all of the idiotic things that have occurred under this administration, deliberate and incompetent. Nobody can feel safe until they are all thrown out in the election. A lot can happen between now and then, so we live in fear.

22. I am searching for a link to something I heard on CNN or FAUX
Edited on Sat Aug-07-04 05:56 PM by NightOwwl
this morning.

The White House defense is:
1) Democrats were accusing this alert of being politically motivated.
2) White House felt pressured by the Dems to capture someone fast.
3) The guy they capture is part of a sting operation.
4) If there hadn't been so much pressure, they would have waited before arresting a possible suspect.

See the logic? It's the Democrats fault! I'll keep looking for a link.

23. So they don't work well under pressure, well then, I guess they are not
the right people for the job.

I guess they didn't realize that running a couple of wars and being the head of a large country would entail any pressure. They don't think things through either.
