5. True....
but he has a tendancy to kiss up to his repub guests and agree with them at times just to show repubs that they do not have to be afraid to come on his show....

14. He once said
he likes people who are outspoken even if he doesn't agree with them.
I guess Ann is one of them.

20. I think it has to do with the fact he has a hard time getting laid.
He has said this on his show several times. With that kind of a problem, even Ann looks like a princess, I am sure.

10. Bill likes to have his cake and eat it too
you can't have it both ways - he even made the most disgusting crack last Friday night about Barak Obama, calling him by the RNC talking points, OSAMA... so Bill Maher, screw you.

11. i think after the last show
Maybe he figured they'd humiliated those republicans so horribly on the last episode with Michael Moore that he'd try to go the opposite direction some on this show.

22. Did you notice at the end of the show
neither Drier or Nader was there? Just the wonderful Canadian Prime Minister woman...sorry...missing her name but she was so gracious and smart. And Michael Moore. I think Drier really got crispy. He was bright red and looking like he was about to explode. The audience was against him and Moore and the lovely lady kept out-witting him. I think Maher is trying for balance; doesn't want to get known as "that liberal show". He doesn't want to fall into the Dennis Miller can't get anybody on my show spiral.
Watch tonight. I think even the whores are getting shifty. I predict Cokie will be rather amenable...rather agreeable. She's not sure where her next meal is coming from so she'll be placating and sweet. While she hopes we all forget what a slut she's been.

12. some balance is good
Hopefully Cokie will be asked to account for some of the media's bullshit, and Barr's been siding with the ACLU lately, so he beings an interesting perspective.

The show is more interesting when the panel is balanced -- last week, it was almost painful to see Maher, Moore, Campbell, and really the entire audience just beat the hell out of Dreier. That's fun for a while, but shoutfests are never very illuminating.

19. No, it wasn't almost painful
and as far as balance goes, I fail to see how 1 show out of 10 that actually has Progressives stand down Conservatives doesn't balance the other 9 where it goes the other way. Instead in typical Progressive fashion we're worried that that one show wasn't balanced in and of itself.

BTW, the woman on that show was a Republican Canadian ex-PM, so technically it was two Repubs against a Dem with a Libertarian as moderator. Of course, those labels don't tell the full story, as a Canadian Republican is obviously not the same species we have down in the lower 48.

21. balanced is more interesting
I understand how, in the cosmic battle for all that is good, it helps to have as many libs getting exposure as possible. But in my opinion it makes for better TV if the cons look bad because their arguments suck, not because they get shouted over.

And Kim Campbell is in no sense technically a Republican. She was with the old Progressive Conservative party, which was to the right of Canada's Liberal party, but nothing like Republicans in the US. Or whatever label the Canadian Alliance is hiding under nowadays.

23. I really didn't see much shouting over
Edited on Fri Aug-06-04 03:05 PM by Chris
A couple of times for five or ten seconds maybe, after which Campbell in the middle or Maher the moderator came up with a one or two-liner that sounded great and really shut it down.

Mostly it was Drier with his usual talk-over motormouthing, and Michael Moore just sitting there with a sardonic look on his face before he responded. It really wasn't much of a gang-up. It was mostly Drier tirades which were then slammed cogently and fairly quickly. The only time they really got into it was when Drier essentially called F9/11 dishonest and used a fabricated quote to do it. Moore interrupted him and then knocked him down two or three times in sequence with corrections. He had every right to do so.

No, I've got to disagree with your assessment of what happened, and I've watched it three times now fairly closely. Drier probably talked more than either Campbell or Moore. It was really a very fair knockdown even though the outcome was so one-sided.

As to your broader point about parity, I'm not so sure I agree with that either, but this post is already too long.

15. the last show was harsh on the guest republicans.
..so much so he left before the show was over..

..he commited the big mistake of trying his pre-scripted talking points, but could not back them up when confronted..looked real bad.
