Primer on MO elections today - polls close 7 pm CDT
Gay marriage amendment: The constitution will be amended to say that marriage is between one man and one box turtle. This is the first state constitutional amendment to come up for a vote this year.

Governor: The incumbent Democrat, Bob Holden, is being challenged by the state auditor, Claire McCaskill for the Dem nomination. This is a contentious race. Holden is generally well-liked, but he's made two big mistakes. First, he spent a million dollars on his inauguration party. Second, he didn't like the budget from the Repub. legislature, so he didn't sign it. This held up funds for schools. Good that he stood up to the Repubs. Bad if you are a teacher or a parent of a student. Claire is popular, but some are pissed that she may have ensured that the Republicans win in November. Holden has hit back because she promised to monitor retirement homes, but may have overlooked problems with her husband's retirement homes. Who knows the truth, but that's what was said in the commercials.

Gephardt's seat: Ten people vying for the Dem nomination. The serious candidates are: Jeff Smith, the DFA candidate. He probably won the debate, but is very young (31 year old Wash U grad student in poli sci). Mark Smith is a Harvard grad, Wash U law school grad, and is an Associate Dean in the law school at Wash U. Has the endorsement of the St. Louis Post Dispatch. Russ Carnahan is a State rep and son of Jean and Mel. He has been hit hard by his opponents about living off his family name and missing a lot of votes. Joan Barry is the pro-life Democrat, whatever that is.

Other:
An amendment to build a casino 12 miles from Branson.

Nancy Farmer will win the nom to face Kit Bond for US Senator. Nancy is our hope to get rid of the despicable Republican Senator.

Check out the white supremicist running for the Repub nom for governor, Martin Lindstedt (Rep). http://elections.post-dispatch.com/voter/statewidemo.asp

Finally, an honest Republican! "My goal is to destroy the Missouri Republican Party by divorcing from these suburban corporate supremacists the genuine racists like myself."
"I would like to create a social order akin to that of 1875 Missouri, in that the white man is the absolute master of family and state, the white woman is cared for within the family setting and it is heaven on earth for white children. This past reality shall eventually return by means of revolution, civil warfare, famine, disease and death."

I voted early this morning. Keeping my fingers crossed...

23. Don't be so sure. . .
Down here in Springfield Billy Long the auctioneer who is on one of the morning talk shows was encouraging everyone to take a Dem ballot to vote against the guy who keeps blocking the SMS name change. There are also a lot of Repubs who like to take the Dem ballot and vote for who they think will be the easiest candidate to beat. There aren't normally a lot of choices to make on the Repubs ballot down here.

All that said a lot of the Repub's may have voted on the Dem ballots for the amendment.

BTW check out the letter to the editor in the news-leader about the Bush rally.

34. Dem does not necessarily mean one supports gay rights.
I was on the bus after work Monday night and a couple of black women were talking about their church holding a rally in support of Amendment 2. While these women are anti Bush they are VERY conservative socially. This is something Dems forget and forgot yesterday when many assumed that with a higher Dem turnout Amendment 2 would fail. I know this was what people felt because I had Dem organizers say it to my face. I quickly countered that argument because I don't travel only in activist circles. I am on public transit and I hear what people say and were saying about Amendment 2. F'in fundy Christians!

Sad sad day for progressive thinking Missourians. I have to get over my intense anger because one of my co-workers told me yesterday she was not voting because she did not research the issues. I said to her that it shouldn't take much research to know that one did not want to enshrine hate into the state constitution via Amendment 2. She didn't care, she said the summer just got away from her and she didn't have time. Sure she had time to go to stupid baseball games but not time to vote...

FURIOUS!

19. I am on the side of the losers
Both guys I voted for are losing: Metzl (U.S 5th) & Holden (Gov.)

I'm losing on two of the three issues, too: K.C. Arena Taxes & Anti-Gay Marriage Amendment.

I'm only on the winning side of the casino amendment. And in that victory, I'm in with the FUNDIEESSSSZZZ!

And I'm an atheist.

Total Votes for Senator 836,300

Total Votes for Lt. Governor 815,934

Total Votes for Treasurer 768,861

Total Votes for Atty General 744,328

35. Unofficial breakdown of votes: St. Louis County and St Louis City
http://www.stlouisco.com/elections/040803un.html
ST LOUIS COUNTY:
CONSTITUTIONAL AMENDMENT NO 1
ROCKAWAY BEACH GAMBLING - SIMPLE
YES . . . . . . . . . . . . 101,234 39.69
NO . . . . . . . . . . . . 153,851 60.31

CONSTITUTIONAL AMENDMENT NO 2
DEFINE MARRIAGE - SIMPLE
YES . . . . . . . . . . . . 154,638 60.56
NO . . . . . . . . . . . . 100,708 39.44

The conservatives, Republican AND Democratic ones, basically did a better and more effective job at organizing their base. Democrats and other progressives assumed, WRONGLY, that all Dems were against Amendment 2. This is what happens when a base is listened to and not ignored and taken for granted. That base actually gets out and VOTES. Wow, what a concept!

http://stlcin.missouri.org/bdelection/ballotDetails.cfm?ElectionKeyId=1&ViewType=issue&RecordId=1
ST LOUIS CITY:
CONSTITUTIONAL AMENDMENT NO 1
ROCKAWAY BEACH GAMBLING - SIMPLE
Yes (For the Amendment) 200
No (Against the Amendment) 201

CONSTITUTIONAL AMENDMENT NO 2
DEFINE MARRIAGE - SIMPLE
Yes (For the Amendment) 215
No (Against the Amendment) 216

For the City of St Louis results, I can't tell if the above numbers represent the number of votes against and for the two amendments or the number of precincts who voted a particular way. Difficult to tell. I cannot imagine that little more than 400 people in a city of 300,000 bothered to vote on the two amendments.

37. A2
I just can't friggin' believe 70%!

How the h@ll can 70% of the state be bigots and religious nuts?!?

If my fiancee doesn't get the job she's up for in St. Charles, I might seriously start thinking of moving to Illinois. Not that southern IL is much better, but at least they've got Chicago, with enough population to offset a lot of their nuts.

Last I saw, almost 50% of ST. LOUIS voted FOR A2!

Unfortunately, I think others here are right, and not only the crossing over of Repubs to vote Dem, but the fact that a lot of Dems weren't going to vote against A2. Although everyone I know voted against. Even the Bush-supporting Repug I work with at my 2nd job voted against it!

38. Primer on MO elections today - polls close 7 pm CDT
I have to say I'm disappointed in my state with the Gay marriage amendment. I knew down inside it would pass though. The key here is that we got lucky it didn't make in on Nov 2nd something that the republicans in the state were trying hard to do. Read that Ohio is going to have theirs on Nov 2nd, that does make me nervous.

At least the gambling didn't make it in. I got so tired of seeing those damn commercials with that old crabby bitch on them.

These commercials for those that haven't seen them went on and on about 1000 new jobs and how their kids were leaving the town and blah blah. 1000 new jobs of what, 8 buck an hour garbage with no benefits? Then I find out this town is only a few miles from Branson... heh the capital of low wage jobs in Missouri probably. All the hotels, concessions etc etc.... yeah no jobs available to those in Rockway.. right.

KC Arena passed, I expect the city to fuck it up and impose some good old sales taxes on everybody in a few years to keep it floating.
