32. OMG, she's a joke!
"Barthwell also said she is recovering from addictions to alcohol, cocaine, prescription drugs and marijuana, but has not used any of those substances for 20 years. "

“My history is much like many other people,” she said

If you haven't read the article at the link above, you have to read it now!!

They should run the Oberweise guy, (good milk, too, expensive, but good) these two are just idiots.

38. UberAlles...er...Oberweis has been painted as a racist
he actually paid somebody to carry a sign at the meeting today that said "Mexicans for Oberweis" because his anti-immigration ads in the primaries were racist as hell.

He'd get even fewer votes and really paint the Republicans for what they are.

Neither of them will get any funding.

Senator Obama should start shopping for homes in DC.

6. So, why isn't Alan Keyes
a carpetbagger? He is currently living in Maryland. Apparently, there is no residency requirement in Illinois to run for Senator, so all he would have to do is move there to run.

Why do you suppose it is that Hillary was a carpetbagger in NY, despite actually owning a home there, but Alan Keyes can move to Illinois for the ADMITTED purpose of running for the Senate there and not be one. I mean, he is actually being recruited to do this!

9. Here is one big difference
A lot of New Yorkers wanted Hillary to move to NY and run for the Senate.

No one in Illinois cares about Alan Keyes, on the other hand.

This should be good. Obama may win with the biggest vote percentage in the history of Illinois politics.

10. Actually, it's a combination of the U.S. Constitution and the SCOTUS
U.S. Constitutions says somebody needs to be a resident on the day of the election in a Senate race.

SCOTUS deemed 30 days was adequate to establish residency in order to be eligible to register to vote.

Registration deadline in Illinois for the general election is October 5.

Spetember 5 is the drop dead date for him to move to Illinois, and all he needs to do is rent an apartment and have mail delivered to it.

37. The GOOPies Made Noise About That In 2000...
Before Hillary chose New York, there were rumors she may try to run from either Arkansas or Illinois. Lots of us here would have loved that except for two small problems:

1.) The only upcoming election was for the seat currently held by Senate Minority Leader, Dick Durbin.

2.) The next opening would have been in 2004...against Peter Fitzgerald...and I'm glad Hillary made the run in New York and has given us 4 years of solid service.

11. Nope, it's a constitutional thing
Resident on the day of the election, so long as he moves to Illinois by October 3, he can run. so long as he moves to Illinois by September 5, he can register and vote for himself.

Or Alan Keyes, who wouldn't represent Illinois but would represent Alan Keyes.

The Republican Party is going to be doomed to third party status in Illinois after this year. Watch, the Libertarian will get more votes!

28. I would suspect you're close to the truth.
They can't find anyone who wants to lose 1million$ of their own money so they would like to set up a minority candidate to lose and then claim it's Dem racism against any Rethug minority. Plus none of the locals take a bullet for the party.

I guess he's the sacrificial lamb.

Wonder why they didn't just give it to Oberweis. He did offer to spend his own money.

21. They think Keyes will draw national attention
and will force Obama to run a race.

Little realizing that Alan Keyes' politics are somewhere to the right of Ghengis Khan and will turn off more Illinois voters than even Ryan would have. At least Ryan lives here!

I swear, the Libertarian is going to get more votes than the Republican this year in Illinois.

Edited on Tue Aug-03-04 07:58 PM by RatTerrier
...are hard-core AM talk radio dittoheads and political junkies.

To everyone else, he's a nobody. Especially since Obama is a state hero now. You know it's a lost cause when many Republicans have started supporting him.

I agree with you about the Libertarian candidate. I wish the GOP was this messed up in every state. Must be a harbinger of things to come.

26. "It was a very democratic process," said Ron Smith of the 6th District
Isn't it amazing how twisted the Republican concept of democracy is? Five Supreme Court judges pick the President of the United States. Fourteen Republican party czars in Illinois meet in secret and ordain their nominee for the Senate.

Yeah...they know democracy all right.

44. No one wants to be the sacrifice.
Oberweis came in second but said he already spent 3 million and requires B$$$ and hASStert to fully support him. As Durbin said at a rally with Obama on Sunday, either they put up a loser or some one who didn't have the courage or desire to run in the Primary.

43. Party Chairman Moe Howard Says...
This is a vain attempt by a totally discredited party in trying to turn absolute implosion into just ridicule. The egg on Judy Barr Topinka's (and her fat cat backers) is they haven't found a candidate (Jack Ryan was forced out over a month ago) and the party has no real statewide candidate for the local parties to rally around. The knives have been out for a long time and this gets better by the day.

Keyes is a Hail Mary that would be a total disaster, and I hope Keyes runs. I can't wait for the debate where Keyes is asked about local and state issues that are the chief responsibility of a Senator and see him stumble and bullshit. This isn't the beltway, the Chicago media will eat him alive.

It's sad that the GOOP has to find a "token" (and I despise that term but it surely applies here) to try to stop what appears to be one of the freshest voices of a new generation of ALL Americans...who just happens to have a black father. The racism in the GOOP is so pathetic as they have bombarded the political landscape with wedge issues and buzzwords (plantation) that further alienate a lot of blacks. Stupid is what stupid does.
