Who Replaced JFK in Mass. U. S. Senate Seat in 1961?
Edited on Wed Jul-28-04 04:31 PM by louis c

The answer is not Ted.

Ted was months shy of the constitutionally required 30 years of age. The Governor chose a replacement to just keep the seat warm for Ted until he reached the proper age.

What was this man's name? I can't seem to find it anywhere, and I want to answer this trivia question at work.

2. Benjamin A. Smith II
He served from 1960 to 1962, then Ted Kennedy was elected to the post, and has served ever since.

6. Ted never...
wanted to be in politics. He planned on moving to New Mexico and become a writer. John's death pushed him into politics.

8. That's right. Ted was a reluctant politician
I read that he was the only one of the brothers that remembered his dad as being warm and affectionate. That's because being the baby, nothing was expected of him and he was the only one that Joe Sr was affectionate with. On the other hand his brothers remembered their dad as demanding and stern. Its kind of ironic that the Kennedy who was least expected to enter politics or have much impact and of whom the least was expected ended up having the most impact and leaving the biggest mark. No one knows what kind of political impact--or I should say further impact Bobby and Jack would have had if they had lived. And who knows what Joe Jr. might have done. But Teddy, the baby-- has ended up being a great force in the Senate and if you look at almost any piece of legislation that has to do with worker rights, the environment, civil rights, etc. He has had something to do with it. And in addition to all this has had to take on the role of patriarch of the family. He was probably the least prepared to do any of this too It just strikes me as how funny life can end up being somtimes. Often the people that are least expected to do anything end up having these amazing lives.
