Kenya's Plea for Food Aid

President Kibaki was today expected to launch an international appeal for food to help almost three million Kenyans facing starvation.

The decision was arrived at yesterday during the first Cabinet meeting of his new-look government of national unity, held at State House, Nairobi.

The launch will be made even as the Government announced it had set aside Sh1billion to buy food for areas stricken by famine.

The announcement by Cabinet minister Chris Murungaru was being made in Parliament at a time when the Kenya Red Cross was seeking 28,500 tonnes of grains and 5.2 million tonnes of oil to feed for one month an estimated 1.4 million people faced with famine. Approximately Sh610m is needed to buy the food which is rationed out at Sh13kgs of maize, 4kg of beans and 0.75 litres of oil for one person a month.
