I just heard on the radio that *Bush said (today?) that . . .

. . . the Marines in Iraq will eventually be replaced by U.N. peacekeepers. Does anyone know anything about that? When did the U.N. get on board? Why would they want to? Especially with all of the depleted uranium, etc. I can't imagine any country would want to send in soldiers now. Granted, we need them, but I thought Bush had said no to the U.N.'s help and vice versa.

4. Now I'm not sure . . .
Edited on Tue Aug-19-03 01:16 AM by TeeYiYi
I could have sworn it was in reference to Iraq. I'm pretty sure they said Iraq but now I'm going to have to wait until the news comes on again. (That happens at least once or twice an hour on this radio station.)

Thanks for your help. If you're still up in the next 45 minutes, I'll post what I find out.

3. Liberia, not Iraq
Edited on Tue Aug-19-03 01:14 AM by Newsjock
Chimpy said the U.N. will replace our forces in Liberia, not Iraq, by Oct. 1.

On edit: OK, so everyone replied all at once. Here, I'll help by offering a link as well:

http://www.newsday.com/news/politics/wire/sns-ap-bush-liberia,0,5189213.story?coll=sns-ap-politics-headlines

CRAWFORD, Texas -- The 200 U.S. Marines sent as peacekeepers into war-ravaged Liberia have a limited mission and will be withdrawn by Oct. 1, President Bush said.
The Marines landed last Thursday, charged with aiding an eventual 3,250-person West African peace force meant to end 14 years of near-constant strife in Liberia.

7. So why not do the same in Iraq?
What's so different between the two situations?

2nd Largest known oil reserves wouldn't be influencing his decision, would it?

Really, the actions of this administration are so transparent....oil will be the reason that US Marines will be forced to shed their blood for years to come.

9. Either Bush withdrawing, or Bush pulling a Nixon...
When Nixon realized that he was going to lose in '72 because protesters were getting so loud, he pretended that he was pulling out of Vietnam. It was a brilliant strategy because McGovern ran on nothing else. Apparently, McGovern totally failed to define himself in any terms other than his opposition to war. When Nixon took this issue away, McGovern had nothing else to run on. Nixon won. Nixon didn't pull out. It was just talk. Bush is probably pulling a Nixon.
