H-H-S Report: Bush administration broke no laws in withholding true Medicare costs

Washington-AP -- An internal investigation finds that the Bush administration broke no laws when it failed to provide Congress with estimates of the true cost for the new Medicare law.

The administration had been criticized for withholding the higher estimates -- about 100 (b) billion dollars more than what they've publicly acknowledged.

The unsigned review was done by the inspector general of the Health and Human Services department.

The conclusion runs counter to the findings of the nonpartisan Congressional Research Service.
