I got an inquiry from an immigrant who has just moved to my city. He wants to become politically active, but does not know what is in bounds and what is out of bounds. From my days with one of the Dems primary campaigns, I know that he could work for Kerry or the Green Party candidate, so long as he did not contribute money - at least that is what I was told by campaign HQ. As far as protesting etc., I am not sure how far to tell him he should go. I did tell him that I thought it wise to avoid high-profile protests since the Bush administration has a penchant for disappearing immigrants, but I don't know if it is relatively safe to do candlelight vigils, flyering or social justice type actions (for instance migrant worker advocacy). The person appears to be Hispanic and very sweet - does not know much English.
Any advice? Thanks, Carol
