Dear Southerners
It could be worse: You could live in Nebraska.

1. How many Southern threads will there be tonight?
Perhaps John Poindexter should have speculated on the likelihood and numbers of a DU Southern Thread.

and contributes something worthwhile to society at large.

5. Nebraska...let's see...
Corn, football (painful subject, since the Huskers have beaten up on my beloved Tennessee Volunteers the last two times)....hmmm...I think there was a South Park episode featuring Cartman's relatives who lived in Nebraska....Johnny Carson, and...Mutual of Omaha?

6. Well, we did produce Montgomery Clift, Marlon Brando, and Malcolm X also
But they all had the good sense to get the fuck out of this stupid state in their childhood or teen years. I'm still stuck here at 23.

22. Husker football
The late great Nebraska football coach, Bob Devaney, was not only from Saginaw, Michigan (as always, The Center of the Universe), but grew up on the same block I live on (I can see the house from my kitchen window) and went to Arthur Hill HS, same as MSchreader and me.
John
Nebraska also gave the world Bob Gibson and Henry Fonda, IIRC (both from Omaha). And you, of course, SZJ.

Big Orange Country. The Center of the Universe.

9. Nick Hexum, et al ...
Didn't 311 come from Omaha? If all they ever did was "Music" then Nebraska earned its statehood, in my book.

15. Yes
They recorded Music and Grassroots in Nebraska. Chad Sexton, Nick Hexum, Doug Martinez, P-Nut, and Tim Mahoney :) Nebraska is awesome for raising folks like that

18. Bush Won't Need to Campaign in Nebraska
Bush can pretty well sit on his hands in 2004 as far as Nebraska is concerned. The state voted overwhelmingly for him in 2000 and will probably do so again next election.

Nebraska*     (5)     62-33

Source: http://www.multied.com/elections/2000certified.html

* 5 electoral votes, Bush wins by a 62-33 percentage point margin

Note: It is considered bad form to make personal remarks about Nebraskans.

21. Fall? What's that?
Here in San Diego seasons are just rumors. I've heard in some places water falls from the sky, sometimes in the form of ice! I think the latter is just a joke though. Water from the sky? Pull the other one!

26. As a San Diegan who travels
I can assure you that water does fall from the sky, especially near the equator.

I've never seen any of this so called Ice from the Sky stuff, though. Not in Singapore, Hong Kong, Bahrain, Qatar, Darwin, nor Hawaii.

It's something made up to fool the gullible.

3. I've lived in the south and the midwest
...and although I'd never willingly live there again, I do have to say that when you meet your first lefty in either place, you've met a friend for live.

Southern and midwestern lefties tend to be the most thoughtful and committed in the country, if only because they're surrounded by people who think they're a little nuts at best, and god-hating Communists at worst. They have to endure a lot, and they should be deeply respected for continuing to fight the good fight.

10. Thank you..
...from one of four known liberals in St. Tammany Parish, Louisiana. I'm surrounded by people who consistently voted for David Duke every time he ran for office.

Oh, how it sucks to be a liberal in this haven for dittoheads.

12. David Duke used to live
in a gated community just a few miles from us. He is currently residing in a different kind of "gated community" for tax evasion and mail fraud. When he gets out and runs for something again, he will probably carry our precinct 3 to 1.

13. the midwest is not so bad
I have lived in Missouri, Ks, Ne, SD, Mn, Wi, and Ia. There are tons of lefties in the Madison, Wi area; Mn is notoriously liberal; SD has produced McGovern and Daschle and Tim Johnson; Iowa does stand for Inbred Oafs Without Affability (or, after my two seatbelt tickets and subsequent trials - Incorrigible Oppressors Without Accountability) but Vilsack is governor and it was carried by Gore. As for Nebraska, first, my baby sister lives there and she is way cool, and second, lefties were the vast majority of our department when I was a graduate student in economics there in the late 80s.

20. Bush Won't Need to Campaign in Oklahoma
Bush won Oklahoma's 8 electoral votes by a thumping 60-38 margin in 2000. He probably won't waste a lot of time campaigning there in 2004. It's really unfortunate that Oklahoma has deteriorated so badly since the days of presidential candidate Senator Fred Harris. (He's alive and well, by the way.)
