F9/11 Converted a Freeper!
I post on several music related message boards, one of which being a very high traffic Phish board. Theres plenty of democrats there, but theres also a small but loud group of right-wingers. A couple of them are pretty hardcore, and spew Hannity/Coulter/Limbaugh-esque crap day after day. It bugs me since theres alot of impressionable teenagers who read the boards and the saturation effect can take its toll.

Anyway, today one of the most vocal, who admitted to me once he is a regular visitor of FreeRepublic (and accused me of being a DUer before I ever said anything alluding to it) posted his review of the film. I expected to see his normal tirade on "dirty libs" or something similar, and was actually quite shocked by what I saw. He loved the movie. He said it was like "a bucket of cold water being thrown in his face" and it "chilled him to the bone". He said he is very seriously considering re-thinking his vote come november, and is done supporting this administration. I was absolutely shocked, as was everyone else who has followed this guy and knows his reputation.

So, score one for the good guys. Lets hope they all see it and have a similar reaction.

3. If what you say is true, that is what the right wingers and the media
is afraid of what will happen. That it will wake up a lot of people.

4. Thanks for posting, MirrowAshes
I think both sides should see it. You can make up your mind afterward. You either believe it or not. It never hurts to question and research any questions you might have. But I really think it is our duty to evaluate this administration and their policies. Just do it for our children...

I am a big fan of Michael Moore, so I might be biased.

5. Maybe some of these people need an out
I feel like so many people just moooooved with the majority through this whole mess -- so many people haven't been paying attention.

I was thinking today -- I saw the movie at 1pm in a packed theater in the middle of Indiana -- that I wished we'd had that many turning out here for the war protests.

But that's all I'll say. I'm joyous to see them now!

9. No one likes to be duped
I think it's important to verbalize that Freepers are not monsters ... they are patriotic and think they are doing the right things for their country. Many who allow themselves to see this film will realize that they have been duped and used. No one likes to know that they have been played for a fool.

10. Stop that
If freepers think they can be free thinking ... and then that liberals can be free thinking ... and then that true patriotism allows for free thinking ... and diversity of opinion ... and then, and then, oy, we might just allow everyone to be themselves.

Are you/I are liberal plot?

It must really be hurtspin to have what you've believed turned all upside down on you.
Hell, I was a semi-freeper (i.e. beleiving the 'news') at one time and let me tell you.... it's painful.

19. Well said chamilto!
I thought that the fellow talking about how the government keeps the fear factor going would especially be an eye-opener for a lot of people. IMO, that is what keeps people thinking * will save them.

taken in (made a fool of) by snake oil salesmen. It's human nature, few folks want to admit they've been outsmarted. Rape victims are another demographic that shares a similar perceived 'shame.'

And that's a shame.

16. Okay a question because of your post.........
Edited on Sat Jun-26-04 12:11 AM by Sugarbleus
I can't see the film until Sunday. That's fine. What I want to know is how can I encourage my "fence sitter" daughter and her conservative boyfriend to go see this film?

My daughter lives in another town. Currently she is living in with her father who is a rabid RWer! He passed by the tube while my daughter was watching a show with Clinton on and chucked a hairball over it!

My daughter is 32. She served in Persian GulfI. She is pretty apolitical but those around her are not. I love her, she loves me. We talk often. When I first started chatting with her about the mess this country is in, she thought I was crazy. She thought I'd gone off my rocker. Her family (her dad's side) is so quiet and "normal" and "don't rock the boat" types. She couldn't believe I would march or do anything of the sort. I talked about the mess we're all in with passion and she freaked out. She will listen but she still seems too "reserved" to just GO FOR IT. I even told her I'd pay for her and her gentleman friend. I told her to just see it. Maybe she'd like it, maybe she wouldn't...just take a look and judge for herself.

I've often told her that I am not the ONLY person talking like I do. I asked her if she ever reads the papers or watches any news at all. She doesn't. She does, however, have to listen to her father rant and rave about liberals. These people, while nice enough human beings, are so not informed.........it's pathetic. I've sent them emails on occasion to refute things they send me. I never hear back.

So, I don't really care about my daughter's father, but I do care about her and my grandchildren by her. HOW DO I CONVINCE HER TO SEE THE MOVIE? I tried this evening to persuade her. She didn't say no...so we'll see what happens. She always gets really quiet when I bring up politics. It's weird. Our relationship is wonderful otherwise.
Frustrated mom here, SB

25. Well, like I said
She lives in another town far away. I've offered to pay for her tickets and her boyfriends (plus I sent her money for the grandkids when the come to visit her)....we shall see.

I was curious about what other things I could SAY to her to convince her. Maybe, just maybe she'll do it and surprise me. I'll let you all know because if she takes her conservative boyfriend and he is impressed than we got a homerun!! ;-)

I kinda like the idea of sending her/them money for a meal/dinner in addition to tickets.

27. She's 32 YRS OLD. If she has trouble making up her own mind to
do stuff like what movie to see or who to vote for I seriously doubt there's much you could do at this point.

By all means, try to convince her to see the movie, and at minimum to NOT vote for the boy king, but she is a grown woman after all.

23. So Moore isn't preaching to the choir. My local news kept telling me ...
tonight that the only people going to see it will be people who weren't voting for Bush anyway.

24. We should have a Liberal Altar Call!
At F-9/11. Y'know, like in fundie church services, where they ask those who want to accept Christ as their savior to come down front?

We can have a Liberal Altar Call, for those who want the Saving Grace of Liberalism to pierce their Freeper souls!!!

Maybe I should take a stack of voter registration forms to the theater (I can't see it till it friggin' GETS to my Repug town -- probably a week late!) and just yell at the end of the movie, "Anyone want a voter registration form?" Get them while they're motivated!
