Michael Moore's "Fahrenheit 9/11" comes under right-wing attack...
Http://www.wsws.org/articles/2004/jun2004/fahr-j21_prn.shtml

By David Walsh
21 June 2004

US filmmaker Michael Moore's new documentary "Fahrenheit 9/11", scheduled to open in more than 500 theaters on June 25, has come under fierce attack from right-wing Republican elements. The campaign against the film, which harshly criticizes the Bush administration's response to the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks, is an indication of the sensitivity of the cabal in the White House to any light being shed on it's activities.
<snip>

The president of Lion's Gate, Tom Ortenberg, told the press, "I think the message of the movie is so important that it should be available to be seen by as wide an audience as possible. Frankly, I don't consider any of the images in the film any more disturbing than what we have all seen on cable news networks and the gratuitous violence that fills the screen of so many PG-13 rated action pictures."
<snip>

Moore also notes that "some very sophisticated individuals have been hacking into and shutting down our website. It is an hourly fight to keep it up. We are going to find out who is doing this and we are going to pursue a criminal prosecution."
<snip>

The filmmaker also promises to take to court anyone who maligns the film or damages his reputation. Moore has hired fact-checkers and claims that every word and image in the film is accurate. He has engaged a former Clinton advisor, Chris LeHane, to organize a "war-room" to offer an instant response to any attacks from the right wing.
<snip>

Actor Leonardo DiCaprio was so enthusiasitc that he reportedly attended screenings on both coasts.

I'll malign it based solely on the basis of this comment.

So much for free speech.

12. Well, I'm not sure that's how he put it.
At least, I hope not.

I think he specified that he would bring suit for slander or libel. It seems like sloppy journalism to state that Moore threatened to sue anyone who criticizes the film or insults him.

16. Not sure how else to take the following
He has engaged a former Clinton advisor, Chris LeHane, to organize a "war-room" to offer an instant response to any attacks from the right wing.

Operators are standing by to threaten legal action. Call now!

13. He is presumably referring to actual libel
the kind you can sue over. I'd do it too.

14. Classic "liberal media" misrepresentation
Edited on Tue Jun-22-04 09:54 PM by lib71
Moore has employed a team (including Chris Kahane) to defend the film from attacks in the media specifically on the facts as presented. Of course, Moore is not going after anyone who criticizes the film on its merits, but he won't sit idly by while RW scumbags like Snitchens and "Dead Intern" Scarborough accuse him of lying.

17. If they lie or publish falsehoods about him
he has every right to sue.

They have done so in the past and they are out to discredit him now with absolute lies. The courts are one place he has refuge. I don't think he's threatening to sue bad reviews, just those that say he made things up or presented things that are fabricated. I'm sure he and his lawyers have been over every frame of this movie.

20. That's the only right we have left in this country
The right to sue someone else.

By crying wolf before anyone has even seen his movie yet, I think he is doing more to discredit himself.
