bush* seems to be on some kind of psycho-drug here, seeing and hearing things that aren't really there...lashing out into the air with his fists, as people reach out to shake his hand....hallucinating?

on edit: looking at the photos again, note how he is looking right at one person. So this is very personal. Maybe someone said something that really got his back up. Just one person out of the crowd, which would explain the other, friendlier hands-out gestures you also see in the picture.

If you look carefully at the photos, there's really a lot of information being transmitted.

Notice the eyes. To me, they're sinister. Really hardened in the sense that there's nothing he won't do to further his plans. No limit, no boundaries. Even speaking to military personnel, who are about to put his plans into action.

Now also notice his gestures. They're very theatrical. Exaggerated arm movements which say, "we're going to get those evil ones, aren't we?". "Dirty Al-Qaida, living in caves. We'll smoke 'em out".

And yet, the mouth doesn't follow with the rest of his pantomime. I've always had a problem with his mouth which seems to follow its own commands.

You can't see it so much on these photos, but I've commented several times about how the left side droops down unnaturally, like a Freudian crack in his image.

You're right: look at the people beside him. They lower their heads, either in embarrassment, or they can feel the derangedness of this man's psyche, and they wish they could be somewhere else. Just not with this guy.

President George W. Bush’s increasingly erratic behavior and wide mood swings has the halls of the West Wing buzzing lately as aides privately express growing concern over their leader’s state of mind.

In meetings with top aides and administration officials, the President goes from quoting the Bible in one breath to obscene tantrums against the media, Democrats and others that he classifies as “enemies of the state.”

Worried White House aides paint a portrait of a man on the edge, increasingly wary of those who disagree with him and paranoid of a public that no longer trusts his policies in Iraq or at home.

The President's abrupt dismissal of CIA Directory George Tenet Wednesday night is, aides say, an example of how he works.

"Tenet wanted to quit last year but the President got his back up and wouldn't hear of it," says an aide. "That would have been the opportune time to make a change, not in the middle of an election campaign but when the director challenged the President during the meeting Wednesday, the President cut him off by saying 'that's it George. I cannot abide disloyalty. I want your resignation and I want it now."
