Republicans Upset Over Bush Plan to Use Reagan Images, Speeches in Campaign Ads
By TERESA HAMPTON
Capitol Hill Blue Staff Writer
Jun 10, 2004, 08:15

As the nation prepares to bury former President Ronald Reagan, Republican insiders fight among themselves over plans by the political team of President George W. Bush to use images of and speeches by Reagan in new television ads aimed at jump-starting a faltering campaign.

“They’re disgusting,” says one long-time Republican who participated in a focus group to preview the new television ads. “They dishonor the memory of Ronald Reagan and if President Bush allows these ads on the air I, for one, will not vote for him in November.”

The ads, ordered up by Bush political advisor Karl Rove immediately after Reagan’s death last Saturday, use images of Reagan and excerpts from his speeches in what one angry GOP conservative describes as a “callous attempt to tie George W. Bush to the legacy of Ronald Wilson Reagan.”

One proposed ad even goes so far as to show Reagan saying “George, go out and win one for the Gipper.” The clip comes from Reagan’s speech to the 1988 Republican National Convention where the former President’s request was to Bush’s father, George H.W. Bush, in his successful 1988 run for President.

“I cannot believe our party would stoop to using Mr. Reagan’s memory for such political gain,” says another Republican who has heard about, but not seen, the ads. “This goes way beyond any moral or ethical bounds.”…

2. Exactly...
.... they are now in "sling sh*t at the wall and see if it sticks" mode. It is comical to watch how inept they are once their self-made fiascos are so huge even the media can't hide them.

14. Capitol Blue is very colorful but little is substantiated
beyond 'unnamed sources'.

I'd like to wish all they print is true. Objectively, I highly doubt it.

10. I actually think these ads are OK.
Bush and his conservative agenda is very much the product of the Reagan era, and Bush, ironically enough, more of a Reagan Conservative than his father was.

So I think the ads, or the attempt to tie Bush to Reagan, is accurate.

12. They should also have alot of indictments in common as well.
How many were indicted in Reagan's administration and how many *should* be indicted from the * administration?

Those are the comparisons that should be made.

13. Except that
Jr is only going to wind up looking worse off by comparison to a dead guy.

Besides, it looks very much like Jr is grasping for something because he knows he can't run on his own record of accomplishments.

11. Difference between Reagan and Bush
The difference between the two is that Red Ink Ronnie knew exactly what he was doing while ruining the country while Duh-bya hasn't got a clue while ruining the country.

Do you believe it's appropritae for the little idiot-in-chief to use Reagan like this? He and Reagan have NOTHING in common except the "R" next to their names. :eyes: Is FR missing an idiot?

24. I would think so
If you are a public figure, known for a certain schtick or persona, you have a right to control when and how others portray you.

If you are dead, then your estate has that right.

16. how the dictionary defines a GHOUL
1) ghoul. The American Heritage® Dictionary of the English Language: Fourth Edition. 2000.
...One who delights in the revolting, morbid, or loathsome. 2. A grave robber. 3. An evil spirit or demon in Muslim folklore believed to plunder graves and feed on corpses....

ghoulish to put it mildly. pathetic how they have to associate themselves with 20 years ago and to a dead president. like how they associated saddam with 9-11, merely using them in the same sentence does the trick. they have nothing else to offer. the past.

... all this moral outrage from a party that over the past forty years has used some of the dirtiest tricks imaginable to win. One more reason to think of the Republicans as delusional--they have absolutely no sense of proportion. :P
