check out these pics of Bill Clinton with Ronald Reagan

these are after Clinton was elected but before he got into office. and can someone explain what the jelly beans and reagan thing is about. people always joke about it but i don't know how it came about. i'm guessing this is why clinton is laughing at the gift of jelly beans from reagan also.

1. Jelly Bellys were Reagan's favorite candy.
Edited on Mon Jun-07-04 10:28 PM by AntiCoup2k
Few people knew about them when they started out in the late 70's. I remember reading about them in some kids magazine in 78 or so, so I looked for them and got hooked. Expensive habit for a 12 year old, as they were never cheap. They became a household name after Reagan mentioned he liked them, but I still like the beans anyway.

They have always had 40 or so flavors available, but the "Red White And Blue" package was something they invented after Reagan popularized them. I believe in the picture, he's presenting the gift of Presidential Jelly Beans to President Clinton at their first meeting. I remember seeing that on TV actually.

10. I Personally Think...
...that reagan was senile from circa 1982. Maybe the shooting had something to do with it.

I remember my father always referring to him as "senile sam".

13. Clearly ronnie had Alzheimer's a decade before he was diagnosed...
A member of my family had it near 20 years before dying, because it is a real slow disease... I also wonder how many cruel inhumane acts were done/dreamed/agreed to while he was 'out there' in never land playing 'star wars' while neocons thought he was doing a 'great' job...he was fucking up royally without a mind...look at the lionizing being done now... how easy they forget!

7. Jelly beans were a substitute for cigarettes
Edited on Mon Jun-07-04 10:51 PM by RatTerrier
I remember hearing Reagan started using them to kick his smoking habit.

Unfortunately, there's no patch for jelly bean addiction.

9. I'm not sure they were really his favorite
I believe that Nancy mentioned in an interview once that he always had a bowl of jellybeans on his desk . . . or something like that. Anyway, the story took on a life of its own, and Reagan - who if nothing else understood the importance of a good prop department - made it his symbol.

11. He would give JBs to visiting world leaders
It really was a good gimmick, a nice sort of down-home thing.

OTOH, all these people get from Bush* is puzzled stares. In a thought balloon: "Jeez, what was his name again? But boy is he dressed funny, heeheeheehee."

12. Y'know, Reagan probably like Bill
They were both good old boys in their own ways, relaxed and ready with a glad hand. I understand Reagan really didn't like Bush Senior at all, and the Bushes hated the Reagans for being upstart California trash. They certainly seem to be getting along well in these pictures!

17. I think Bill's about 6'4''.Bush I was actually taller than Reagan.I've
read that Smirk would bet friends that his dad was taller than Reagan and then collect.Reagan did appear the taller of the two in pictures, though.
At 6'6'' John Kerry may be the tallest man ever to be President(and he will be).

20. here is Kerry next to Clinton

as you can see Kerry is not that much taller than Clinton. maybe about 2 inches or just under 2 inches taller than clinton. kerry is a thin guy also which makes him appear even more taller. i read somewhere that Kerry was 6'4 though.

and you are right that BushI is taller than Reagan was. they probably posed in ways to make reagan appear taller. i think Bush I may have been the same height as Clinton.

22. I was curious
Edited on Tue Jun-08-04 07:44 AM by neebob
so I looked it up:

Raagan 6'1"
Bush I 6'2"
Clinton 6'2"

http://www.whitehouse.gov/kids/presidents

Judging by the pics with Clinton, I'd say Reagan might have been 6'1" in 1945, wearing cowboy boots.

23. Kerry is 6'4"
Edited on Tue Jun-08-04 08:00 AM by RatTerrier
That would tie him with Lincoln as tallest.

Funny thing is, Bush II is roughly 5'10"-5'11". Wouldn't he feel dwarfed standing next to Kerry, like Dukakis did in '88? A strong advantage for Kerry.

For the record, since he's pictured above, Carter is roughly 5'9".

21. RR quit smoking with Jelly Beans
that was what he said when he was Governor here in CA. Everytime he felt like smoking he would eat a jelly bean instead and eventually he quit the smoking and got hooked on jelly beans...anyway that was the story that went around.

Edited on Tue Jun-08-04 07:59 AM by LoZoccolo
Oh wait a second; he wouldn't have done that because he has the kind of tact and civility to rise to the level of being president rather than not being able to hold a job and spending all day on the Internet. My bag.
