When did "Our Nation" become "The Homeland"?????
The use of this phrase is just ridiculous and * just used it again.
The obvous Nazi parallels are bad enough, but I think the subtext is more a message to "new arrivals" vs those of us who are "home". No longer are we a country of immigrants. Ever since the immigrants changed color on us, it's been "Our Home" being invaded by the illegal "alien" hordes.

:grr:Just another change in our country brought to you by BFEE. :grr:

1. i think you may be onto something
the whole idea of this now being an 'owned' country, where it was once a place of refuge for people needing help. (or at least we pretended it was) strange time in growing up for a 200 year old country.

2. Well see we used to have National Security, but those sneaky terra dudes
pulled an end run and attacked the Homeland instead

so now, see , we gotta protect the Homeland as well as the Nation

cause we couldn't get rid of National Security Advisor C. Rice cause

she did such a good job protecting the Nation which didn't get attacked

and never could she or W* haved guessed that they would go and attack

the Homeland instead of the Nation.

Got it?

13. Homeland is a bullshit meme
Edited on Wed Aug-13-03 04:49 PM by teryang
...like home team, it's nativistic crap to undermine the abstract values that our nation is built on. Its whole purpose, like many of the phony patriotic jingos the corporatists specialize in, is to undermine idealism. It's obscurantist. It's particularly suited for war as a game rather than something that involves oppression, imprisonment, death, suffering and destruction. Homeland is the substitute for human rights and civil identity in a country ruled by law.

It's hylokoi, will to power, Straussian, fascist garbarge.

14. calling the USA the "homeland" disturbs me
As a nation of immigrants, I think most Americans think of their
homeland as the place where their ancestors came from. I know I do.
It's definately a psychological ploy on the part of the reich wingers
to manufacture a sense of duty toward our country. A tribal spirit, maybe - and it just doesn't ring true.

my 2 cents

15. I always thought it sounded really foreign....
....almost never in US history have Americans used this term....even patriotic ones.

Its really a foreign usuage compared to trad US discourse around nationhood and patirotism and identity.

16. VERY interesting origins to that phrase
It's actually a very weird and interesting story. I was hoping someone else would have posted it, because I've encountered it a few times and I keep forgetting to bookmark it. Might've been a Geof Nunberg piece--I'll go look. In any case, if I IIRC, it's from a defense study done back in the 80s. Stuff on protecting us from terrorism and whatnot (surprise). A pentagon piece that was influential on Wolfowitz and became part of the original white paper that he submitted to Cheney, that later evolved into the PNAC thing.

In other words, it ties the present world domination scheme we're involved in back to the pre-Clinton machinations of the neo-cons under Bush I.

Gotta love etymology--it can be revealing as hell.

I'll post back if I can run this down. Meanwhile maybe someone else can correct my rather vague account of it here.

19. I know the term Orwellian has almost become a cliché now

in reference to what these PNAC sons of bitches are trying to accomplish, but that word "Homeland" to my ears sounds as Orwellian as you can get. Every time I hear it, it makes my skin crawl. I heard a Canadian CBC reporter use it once in reference to Canada's own "Homeland Security." I immedidately emailed the CBC and let them know in no uncertain terms I expected more from them than to meekly absorb and regurgitate George Bush's mind control, bullshit, propaganda messages and kindly have their reporters cease and desist from using "homeland" in any context referring to Canada. I've never heard that term used again by the CBC except in reference to the USA situation. I just hope to hell it stays that way, at least until the Anschluss. By then it won't matter anyway.

26. Can we think of another term?
I have hated "homeland" security from the moment I heard it. But "national" security is too broad, sounds like foreign affairs. What could apply to things like first responders and chemical plant security?

27. Easy. "Domestic security"
Edited on Wed Aug-13-03 06:39 PM by DrBB
How's that? The standard term before Corporate Fascism took over. Still searching (see my other post, above) for the actual etymological history of the recent usage of the term "homeland security." Very revealing. A pentagon document that found its way into Wolfowitz's original white paper, submitted to Cheney under Bush I, that became the basis for the PNAC document. Are we surprised?

edit: dropped a phrase

enemies "foreign and domestic"? Why can't we just use the phrase "domestic" security when referring to the U.S.A? I'll never use that other word. Gives me the creeps.
