Lies = Bush from Crawford Texas about jobs this a.m.
I would swear absolutely everything about Bush's short press conference after meeting with his economic advisers in Crawford this a.m., absolutely every non-verbal cue in tone of voice, cadence, and phrasing, everything belied the content of his message. The man telegraphed in every way possible that he is lieing! Did anybody else hear this? It seemed so loud and clear to me that I could hardly believe it. Somebody needs to evaluate a tape of that press conference for non-verbal cues. Where is a good "non-verbal" psychology expert when you need one?

1. A classic non-verbal cue that Bush is lying - his lips were moving!

2. Right, but this was much worse than usual.
Very, very strong cues!!! If this had been one of my high school students when I taught, I would definitely have sacrificed some precious time to do some deep investigation into anything the kid said.

3. His ego was palpable
did you catch the part that showed his anger toward the press when they said the California recall was the biggest political story out there right now? He got all pissed and red, stammered like a little school boy, saying something like, 'I thought the presidential race was the biggest story'...ME, ME, ME. Georgie needs to be sent to his room.

4. Did he nod his head "no" when he was speaking in the affirmative?

I think he showed signs of lying last time I watched him. See for yourself.

NONVERBAL DECEPTION CUES

Liars have longer pauses, shorter answers and longer times between a question and a response than someone who is merely nervous. It makes sense that liars need time to create the lie; recalling the truth takes less time.

You might also check to see where their eyes go after you ask the question. People tend to look up to the right to visualize or create a new response or down to the right to create the sounds of a new response. We recall information that occurred in the past by looking up to the left or down to the left. Spot a liar by listening for pauses and right eye movement.

When people lie spontaneously, they tend to spend more time gesturing with hands and using adapters, such as scratching the body or playing with a pen than someone who is just nervous. If this gesturing seems excessive, and especially if it is combined with other cues of deception, you can bet on lying. On the other hand, the rehearsed or practiced liar, will try to control gestures.

Be careful of pursing or licking your lips. ...Tight lips indicate you may be planning to keep the truth in....To spot a liar, look for unusual movement of the mouth, lips or tongue. Don’t look like a liar; don’t lick or purse your lips and keep yourself hydrated with plenty of water.

5. I detected a distinct "swagger"
as Sheriff Bush and his posse sauntered over to the press pool in their "ranch chic" duds. I was also deeply shocked when he reminded them how "generous" he was being by answering their handful of questions! The relationship this administration has with the press is mind boggling. Bush and Rummy lie right to their faces and even chastise them ("march to war, march to war!") and they roll over and chuckle as if it were a stand up comedy show!
