I respect you for saying it. You put aside your dislike of * when you thought it mattered for the country. I wasn't able to, not even on September 11th itself. I wanted the country to be safe, but my hatred for * , based on the facts as I knew them then, would not allow me to even consider that * would do the right thing. I wanted him impeached then and there so that someone with brains could take charge. I had no way of knowing that he would screw up so badly; it was an emotional reaction. I hadn't discovered DU then, and was just floundering, isolated, and angry. Your goodwill on that day was much more impressive than my stubborn anger, regardless of how it turned out. But it must make you SO angry now, when you were willing to give him a chance....

I remember being so angry when I went to bed on 9-11 I was thinking: "Fuck it, nuke 'em all. Turn the middle east into a parking lot."

I awoke in the morning in a panic thinking: "Shit, that idiot Bush might do it!"

Fienman (damn his soul) said it best, we all hoped Bush would put partisan politics behind him but he did just the opposite. At least for a short time we were willing to. Bush was probably planning his reelection commercials while he was sitting in that room reading the book to the school kids. "Look how calmly the president reacted to the terror. He's a real man!"

On September 11th 2001 I supported the President of the United States. I wasn't happy that he happened to be Bush, but it wasn't like there was an alternative.

Let's face it; after it happened everybody in the country supported Bush. We had to; the country had just been attacked and we needed strong national leadership. We all hoped that Bush, the partisan creature that he was, could rise to the occasion, actually transcend petty partisan politics, and do what was right for America.

Obviously Bush failed in this. He was given one chance at redemption, one chance at true greatness, and he bungled it utterly.

not that it means anything, I'm sure it's just a coincidence, but the hand recount from the Florida elections, done by NYT, WSJ, MH, and LAT were due to come out the week of 911. Instead, they supressed them for another six months because it was "irrelevant".

But, you probably right...Their innocent asses would have been mugged and robbed and left with nothing but a two dollar counterfeit watch...They would probably have accepted some help from some crack ho'es and ended up somewhere in the sticks down in South Jersey listening to some country radio station with cowshit on their little pointed boots abd working for some snaggle-toothed cab driver from New York just trying to make enough money to get back home...

Americans think the World actually LIKES us..We are Wrong..
About 7% of Americans have passports..
What this means is that the extent of the other 93 %'s travel is done to the Caribbean, Mexico and Canada..

My son went to college last year in Florence Italy..
Italy is not a backwater poverty-stricken country, but the whole time he was there he FELT the envy and dislike..These college kids abroad do not flash money or live in fancy hotels.. They had a modest apartment and mingled fully with the locals..They were still dismissed as over-privileged Americans..

Because we are first in line to hand out money and assistance all around the world for each disaster as it befalls the rest of the world, we have a collective sense of.."We are the Good Guys" riding to the rescue..

Most families have a rich relative, who will in time of great need, offer money, but we all know that the money comes with invisible strings attached....

You accept money for a delapidated furnace repair, but when your kid shows up at a family function with a new cd player, that rich relative will undoubtably , ask..."Where did you get the money"? I thought you were broke"....

We send ambassadors all over the world based on their financial contributions to the winner's campaign.. These people usually know nothing about the culture of the host country and rarely even know the language..

We are trying to "Americanize" the world, and they resent us..
A lot more than money is required of us..

Ex-pats who were interviewed on BBC24 after the disaster,were saddened but not surprised at all.. They see how the rest of the world sees us..They all complained too, that the American media is to blame in part too, because they do not want to cover difficult issues, because of ratings.. They are getting ratings now...But at what cost???

We are hurt that the rest of the world doesn't see us as heroes..
A half a century ago, we were heroes, but now we are regarded as interlopers and exploiters by most of the world..

The 93 % who watch E, and FAUX, and Friends, and the other fluff on tv will never know what the world really thinks of us until they get our attention IN A BIG WAY...

I wasn't on DU then. I felt exactly as William Pitt and many others did. I don't even reproach myself for it. It was the right way to feel and the fact that Bush made it impossible to continue to be supportive or that the RW took that moment as a time to take advantage rather than reach out speaks badly of them, not us.

On another, but related note, I noticed this one from William Rivers Pitt:
